Been on the pill for 3 years, I go once a yr for a repeat prescription to the nurse, the last time she said my BMI was on the edge of obese & that if I put on anymore weight she wouldn't recommend me being on the pill. I'm due to go back in January, but I'm so scared cos I think I'm pretty much the same weight as when I went last. I always lose weight over summer eating salads etc then put it back on in the winter and over Xmas!!! I really need the pill cos before I had crippling period pains and massive bleeding every month and the pill has made my life so much better!
I don't have any other risk factors, I don't drink, smoke etc, have no family history of blood clots, so do you think when I go next if I've not lost weight, or god forbid put more on, that they wouldn't give me another prescription?
I know you can get different types of pill with different levels of hormones, so could they switch me to a different one which is safer for people with a high BMI til I lose some weight?

By the way I'm not on it for contraception, I purely use it to make my periods better, before I went on the pill they were so painful and heavy I had to have 3 days off work each month! And also I dunno if last year my BMI was right thinking about it, because she use used the heigh measurement which was already on the computer, and I this was done the year before when I was 18 so I could have grown.

Hey thanks for your answers but the pill was definately the solution to my problems in my case, for a few years I tried all kinds of prescription painkillers which did nothing, I was amazed with the difference to pill makes, I finally get hardly any pain and a normal amount of bleeding and can operate normally when I get my period so I'm desperate to stay on it cos it's helped my life so so much!

Yes, they can refuse to give it to you if they think it's a risk. Although with what you say, you would still be fairly low risk. There are alternative pills though that are a bit more suitable if you're over-weight. Don't worry too much though just make sure you talk to them about it when you go.

My BMI is too high and I was put on the mini pill but, was only told after being on it for 3 months that I needed to take 2 pills a day!! If they do change your pill, make sure that you take heck how to take it.

I came off the pill a few years ago, mainly because I kept forgetting to take and have much better periods than I used to have when I was younger which is something my mum said would happen so it might not be so bad if you stop the pill after all.

Hope this helps

I like you are on the pill because of other reasons, not for contraception, I take it because it levels out my hormones and I don't get bad period pains. I'm sure if you say this to the doctors they will understand. The most important thing is that your blood pressure is ok. If your blood pressure is ok, there is no reason why they can not prescribe you the pill, so don't worry. If the doctor says no because of your weight, I would suggest you change you're doctor and have one that is more understanding.

There are other contraceptives besides the pill which can be used. Maybe if your doc does tell you to come off the pill, they will suggest injections or something like that? They won't just leave you with nothing. I'm sure they'll suggest an alternative.

Maybe the pills are helping you gain extra weight, this can be the case and it's worth asking your doctor about that. Just talk to them and be honest about how you feel.

Read the instructions on the pill. The dosage is not enough for clinically obese women, but DO NOT take extra pills, the hormones will screw you up if you over take them.

Don't eat sugar around your period, seriously, it will make a huge difference in the "crippling pains", but you really have to eat no sugar for it to work.

You may find that if you come off the pill you no longer have the pain - I used to be in agony, but after a few years it changed.
You may also find that oil of evening primrose and b group vitamins will be effective in keeping the pain down (both are available on the nhs).
good luck

I can't quite give you the answer you're looking for, sorry, but if you're worried try changing your diet a little and exercise. If you eat healthier, and exercise for 45-60 minutes 3-4 times a week, you should lose about 1-2 pounds a week.

ok, i have an iud, because I cant have hormones, but I would try to lose a few b4 x-mas, and stick to saldas, drink water, and excersize. alot. Feel good about yourself and tell the nurse it is not any of her business what u weigh, because it is a form of disrcrimination, BMI or not.

you can have the pill but the NHS suggests that its best not to have sex whilst being obese because of the damage you can do to other peoples hips
