It sounds like a good deal since I will be getting DIRECTV anyways. Your thoughts? Are there any hidden costs to going this route?

you should shop and compare. Call 1-800-531-5000 and see if you can get the same deal from the direct sales department. I know of a few offers that are exclusive to authorized dealers such as a special on HD programming through Costco.

the meat-and-potatos of the offers are generally the same. Based off of your credit score you could potentially get a 4-room installation with a $100 advanced product rebate (basically one hd or dvr upgrade at no cost or a hd-dvr upgrade for $199) at no cost and $10 off for 12 months (in addition to other programming offers).

The free DirecTV deal often seems to come with a contract to keep it for a year. So it may be free for a few months to a year but as many of their subscribers will tell you it can be had to cancel and it can cost you too.

DirecTV is direct to home satellite using an 18 inch (approximate size) dish which works because the signal is 10 times more powerful than the signals from satellites feeding the old C-Band and Ku-Band dishes that TV stations use (the ones that are several feet wide).

When DirecTV -- and Dish Network -- does not work is when their are heavy concentrations of clouds in the sky as during, before or after heavy rain. This is something to consider.

You do not need DirecTV to get HDTV all you need is the proper antenna for your area assuming HDTV is broadcast in your area of the US. See http://www.antennaweb.org for choosing your antenna and finding out about digital SDTV and HDTV stations in your area.

These deals are usually available to any new customer so I would not shop at a particular store because they 'offer' this deal.
