one day shes suicidal and unhappy and noone seems to be able to get through to her. the next shes not happy but shes calmer, shes not talking to anyone. she says shes fine.
i think shes lying?
do you think other people notice shes unhapy?
like our teachers?
they know shes depressed
do you think when she puts a smile on her face and says shes fine they know shes lying?
any advice appreciated

She could be pretending to feel better to prevent concerned people from bothering her. It could also be a mood related disorder that cycles between feelings of well-being and depression. It is impossible to know unless she tells you, or you see other signs that she is lying.

Girl, anyone who has suicidal thoughts, or entertains suicidal thoughts AT ALL cannot possibly be all peachy and hunky dory. There is obviously something wrong and that person needs help. Just because she _says_ she's okay, it doesn't necessarily make it so.
Sometimes people tend to deliberately ignore such signs, and I'll never know why.
Eitherway, your friend needs help, preferrably the professional kind. Besides having a case of depression, she may also be bi-polar, so help her get the help she needs. :)

ppl can be very good at lying when they want to. and if people are suicidal indeed, and they express it, then you need to get them help. this does sound like a mood-related disorder.
