Oh, yes! There is something called tryptophan that is a natural sedative in turkey. This is why you see a lot of men sleeping after thanksgiving dinner! Women too!:)

It is a claim made by some studies--they say that the amino acid Tryptophan (pronounced "trip-tuh-fin") in turkey causes drowsiness. Even though there is a high amount of Tryptophan in turkey, it is comparable to the amount in other poultry, so it's a disputed claim.

Other studies show that it's not turkey on Thanksgiving that makes you sleepy, but the other side dishes that come along with it, high in carbohydrates (sweet corn, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, etc. that causes a high release of insulin--thus, making one sleepy after eating all that..)

Personally, I don't really believe that eating turkey makes you sleepy. The correlation between Tryptophan and turkey inducing drowsiness is uncorroborated. It's just an excuse to avoid admitting that people OVEREAT on Thanksgiving. A full stomach is all that it is. It's the true sleep inducer.

I get drowsy if I eat too much turkey. Turkey does contain Tryptophan, a precursor to L-tryptophan, which can cause drowsiness. However, one would have to eat about 14 lbs. of turkey to get any sedative effect. Tukey is also high in proteins and is usually accompanied by high-fat foods. Those are the more likely culprits....

No but eating too much food ( turkey with a combination of other side dishes etc.) will give you that full feeling, then make you feel sleepy.

That's what everyone says but it's never done anything of the sort for me. Doesn't work for my family or friends either.
