No it is isn't a religious festival, it's an American tradition celebrating the pilgrims right? It's not celebrated outside of America, and it's celebrated by all faiths in America.

I think you've confused yourself a little bit, there's a difference between spirituality and religion you know, I'm not expert on Thanksgiving or Atheism myself (I'm an English non-practising christian so there you go) but Atheists are not necesarily nihilists, therefore they can celebrate Thanksgiving, and GIVE THANKS without praising God, because it's spiritual. Duh.

Atheists celebrate lots of things, just without the religious context- I mean I don't even know why Christians celebrate christmas at all, it's pagan holiday with Greek origins and Jesus was born in early autumn anyway. At least Atheists don't pretend. But that's beside the point.

Yes. I contemplate how thankful i am that I have common sense and the ability to reason.

No, sweetheart, "thanksgiving" doesn't mean "giving thanks" TO GOD, it means acknowledging your good fortune and observing that not everyone has what you do. And it certainly doesn't mean spewing nonsense about invisible sky deities.

Sorry, THANKSGIVING IS NOT A RELIGIOUS HOLIDAY. I could just as easily say that if you erect a christmas tree and decorate it and give presents, you must be an atheist, since that's what I do and I'm an atheist. Take a high school reason class and come back.

It's pretty obvious by your additional details that you don't really want an answer to your question and you're simply demonstrating your blatant disrespect to those who believe differently than you do.

I am an atheist. I have a wonderful loving family, I have great friends who are there for me when I need them. My children are healthy, and my husband and I have worked hard enough to have good jobs and a lovely home.

We're thankful, but we don't believe in God so why would we thank him? I'm not sure what world you live in but we live in a world where people get cancer, hit by cars, children are born with physical and mental disabilities, or are kidnapped. We're grateful that none of those things have happened to us and that we have each other.

I think you must be pretty insecure in your religious beliefs to be offended by the happiness of those who don't agree with you.

This has nothing to do with gawd so why wouldn't they?

The original reason for Thanksgiving was for giving thanks they were still alive. After a long hard winter the previous year they now had crops and livestock and enough food to last them through until the spring. This was shown not only to the pilgrims, but to the Indians as well. Without the Indians, the pilgrims would have most likely died out the previous winter.

Adding gawd to it is a recent change, just like saying that Hallowe'en is evil and Satanic.

Well yes. Surely you realise that Thanksgiving is more a tradition than it is a religious event?

Do christians celebrate Halloween as well? The answer is of course yes, although the church has adapted it into "All Hallow's Eve"

Thanksgiving has nothing to do with religion. Why would you ask such a foolish question? Do you not know anything of the United States and what the holidays are about?

The real name for the holiday is Harvest Home. Of course Xians like to appropriate anything for their agenda they can. As they did with the Saturnalia (the real 25 Dec. holiday).
