Most people use heroin the first time on a dare, to experiment or be part of the crowd. They don't want to be different. The bad thing is, now heroin has a way of making people want more and more because it numbs whatever issues you are dealing with. You don't have to deal with your problems head on like most people do. It mellows you out, takes your worries away and takes over your life. Now, you want it more often and it is taking more and more to get the same feelings. Heroin knows no economic boundaries - young wealthy kids try it, poor kids try it; housewives try it and stressed out executives use it. Each one thought to themselves - "it's only this one time to see what it is like".. Now, heroin controls their lives and they can't go without it. It is frequently too late when they finally realize they are hooked. There is often no conscious thought about the consequences when you were only going to do this "once". This drug and all others like it snatch people's lives from them and they often don't know how to get themselves out of the mess they are now in.

Hello,

I think it's a bit like taking up smoking, you know intellectually that it's risky but you think you're special and it's not going to happen to you.

For a lot of people, heroin is pretty much the only happiness in their otherwise miserable, poor, unhappy lives in horrid inner city areas. It really is very good at making you very happy, temporarily anyway. You just need bigger and bigger doses to produce the same effect, and it's very painful to stop. Like cigarettes or alcohol.

If you have very limited access to 'natural' happiness, then 'artificial' happiness becomes very attractive, I think.

Addiction is a mental illness and is very often genetic. Drugs & Alcohol are often used to self- medicate deeper issues. They give temporary release of painful memories and emotions or mental health issues such as bi-polar, depression, etc etc.

It is hard to understand why someone would do this to themselves if you arent an addict as it can seem pretty insane.

Boredom, curiosity and peer pressure are the 3 main reasons, followed by depression, to forget, to 'block' ou some aspect of life (abuse/etc)
