I don’t have a lot of money for food so I’ve been going to the gym to stave off hunger. I figure I’m eating about 30-40g of protein per day and run 20+ per week. Am I damaging my body. I eat a lot of cheap carbs like crackers and white rice

if you are just doing cardio not much over the long or short term. is you are doing heavy weight training then it would be expected to lose muscle over an extended period of time as your body would have a negative nitrogen balance.

you need to eat more high fiber carbs like lentils and beans. they have more protein and fiber per serving as compared to white rice and are just as inexpensive.

How do you have no money for food, but can afford to go to the gym?
If you don't eat properly, you will be in poor shape. Maybe not now, but it all catches up with you in the end.
And why eat white rice when you can get brown rice quite cheaply? I prefer the taste of brown rice anyway, but if you must eat more of those carbs, wouldn't wholemeal bread and whole rice make better sense to you? Your insides will thank you for it and so will your skin.

your muscles just don't grow as they could, that is you don't bulk up as you would otherwise
