I don't know if you understand that Chinese has no alphabet (so there is no phonetic writing) and it is a tonal language, so the same syllable can mean several different things, depending on the tones. The person who told you the English transliteration "Lee" means seveal different things is right. It is a very common (English version) Chinese name, because that version ignores all of the Chinese tones (and writing differences) and mushes all the Chinese versions into one.

Lee is the Cantonese way of translating it. Li is the correct and generally accepted way. There could be many meanings depending on the word. For example, li with a third tone could be pear or also the surname. It really all depends.

There is no 'lee' in chinese.I think it's an english type chinese.Chinese words have 'Li'.It's a family name.The foreign people translate 'Li' into 'Lee'.Also many Hongkong people like to change Li into Lee.Even their family name is Li,but they like to change to Lee.
You need to know is that there is no Lee in chinese dictionary.Only Li.

Lee has many translations in chinese. You would need a character or a context clue. Also, the correct spelling (pingyin) should be Li.

It is a last name, Cantonese is Lee but in Mandarin is Li.
