Yes there are differences. Some will carry greater bandwidth and some will work at longer distance than others. That said, at short distance you should get indistinguishable performance from almost any HDMI cable. See the 1st link for details.

Note that if the cable doesn't work it will be pretty much all or nothing ... not a better or worse picture.

See the 2nd link for an article about how budget cables compare to Monster cables (supposedly the best. Certainly one of the most expensive!).

For short distances I suggest cables from monoprice.com (~$5), and if you are going more than 15' or so see Bluejeancables.com ($25 up). The bluejean site has further information on HDMI you might find useful.

Keep in mind that Digital signals are very insensitive to the perceived quality of the cable. If it passes the signal, a $5 cable will produce identical picture & sound to a $150 cable.

I use the thinner, cheaper MonoPrice cables to feed an HDMI switch. Then the longest cable (12 ft) is the highest quality cable I could get from BlueJeans: $38.
