I used to associate with the organisation and the belief is that these people are "chosen" somehow by God and that they "just know" that they are anointed as one of the 144,000. So I guess I could be one if I wanted to....
I have seen a few in my lifetime. Interesting fact... some of these 144,000 have also been disfellowshipped...

In ancient Israel, there was 1 High Priest and 70 underpriests. These decided the fate of the death penalty for gross wrong. That was when only 1 country was involved. In the NT, there is 1 High Priest (Jesus) and 144,000 underprieses or judges. Revelation 5:9, 10, 14:3....no one but them sing the new song of their office. 1 Cor. chapter 6:1-5 or so.
There is nothing you can do to win or merit that job. Jehovah choses them and gives them to Jesus. He choses the judges according to his own reason and baptizes them in holy spirit so they know they are judges, know they will give up fleshly life, marriage, etc.
Matthew 22:29, 30, 1 Cor. 15:50.
The rest of the people live on a righteous new earth mentioned by Jesus, Paul, John and frequently by OT writers.
Matthew 5:5, 6:10, 2 Peter 3:13, Rev. 21:1-4, Isaiah 65:17-66:1, Psalm 37, Eccles. 1:4 and many more.

You do not "do" anything. Jehovah is the one that does the selecting, and those who do not have this heavenly hope are satisfied with having an earthly one.
I am yet to meet a JW with an earthly hope who is sad, wishing they had a heavenly hope.
When we think of eternal life, we think of it HERE- flowers, fruits, safe animals, sunshine, birds singing, love and peace all over the world.
I can not speak for them, but when the members of the 144,000 think "everlasting life", they obviously get different mind pictures from mine.
I have seen a few from a distance, it was at a large Memorial gathering and as I did not yet speak the local language properly, I did not approach anyone. I spent the whole evening smiling and just nodding my head at those greeting me.
EDIT: Kirk- yes, ANYONE among JWs who continues to practice things forbidden in the Bible gets disfellowshipped- even those of the 144,000. We always say, there is no one above the law among JWs. Even the Bible warns the anointed to be careful lest they lose God's favor.
Revelation 3:11- I am coming quickly. Keep on holding fast what you have, that no one may take your crown.
2 Peter 1:10- For this reason, brothers, all the more do your utmost to make the calling and choosing of you sure for yourselves; for if you keep on doing these things you will by no means ever fail

WHO WOULD DIE FOR THE WORD OF GOD AS DID SOME APOSTLES
The bible is Jehovah's witness and Jesus is the greatest witness of all, and
present day Jw's did not write the bible, they read it and we have all heard about the apostles that died for spreading the word of God, READ: Rev,14:1-6, an angel flying having the everlasting gospel and then verse 7:
Rev.6:9-11; A few have already gone there and why?
At 2007, the bible is circulating in the world 396 years, any saying earth wide about it is heaven and hell, any thing beyond that and these believers are to lazy to comprehend.
We get the bible and it ends the last days and goes into the time of the end.
How many verses do religions leave out of the bible in order to teach the heaven and the hell belief? For sure the 144,000 verse, how do they fit that into the heaven and hell belief?
The 144,000 fits perfect into Matt.13:37-39; the sower and Matt.24:3 [ the end of this world of dying, lying, sick and feeble, killing, wars, funerals and funeral home, graves and cemeteries, hospitals, nursing home and religions with all the building space it takes in this world that will end ], 7 [ after major wars as WW1 and bible 303 years plus Rev.11:3; 42 months times 30 days is Rev.12:6,14; 1260 days or 3 1/2 years Rev.13:1-5, 6-10; and that has passed as Rev.13:11-18; WW2 & the holocaust ends when the bible is 334 years in circulation ], 14 [ the kingdom with the second coming of Jesus and his world is without end and he brings an end to all this old world has known for believers in the salvation he promised, Rev.20:1-6,12,13; WHO IS WITH JESUS? Is it people that died believing in his word? SO WHO ARE THESE WITH THE ANGELS THAT HAS THE EVERLASTING GOSPEL IN THE TIME OF THE END AS THE SOWER IS IN THE TIME OF THE END, RIGHT? and the bible is the word for the time of the end ]; 21,22,34-39;
So who are the 144,000? If they died for the word of God, as the earlier apostles did and as Jesus did, then they are of his baptism into death as Matt.20:22,23; If Hitler said, gas this multitude of people, and you said, no
sir! include me with them as I will gas no one, You have just seen one of the 144,000. EXAMPLE of thou shalt no kill, or love thy neighbor and do not be apart of anything that only Satan would cause to be happening, die first.

No, we don't believe all people who are part of the 144,000 came from the organization. The selection of the 144,000 started in Pentecost 33,CE and Paul apart of it. The selection is by God, and to know which ones are selected, well then you have to understand the the Book of Revelation, which talks about the anointed follows.

My co-worker is a lifelong JW. She said to be of 144,000 its ordained by Jehovah. She claims a few of the chosen were apart of her congregation. They are all dead, I think. There may be 1-2 left, but I think they are all gone.

I am a Christian, one of Jehovah's Witnesses. As I understand it, who goes where is up to Him, we as humans can't make Him do anything.

Those that are of this small number know anyway. however there is no need to be part of that group. see below.
Is heavenly life set out in the “New Testament” as the hope for all Christians?
John 14:2, 3: “In the house of my Father there are many abodes. Otherwise, I would have told you, because I am going my way to prepare a place for you. Also, if I go my way and prepare a place for you, I am coming again and will receive you home to myself, that where I am you also may be.” (Jesus here shows that his faithful apostles, to whom he was speaking, would, in time, be in his Father’s “house,” in heaven, with Jesus. But he does not here say how many others would also go to heaven.)
John 1:12, 13: “As many as did receive him [Jesus], to them he gave authority to become God’s children, because they were exercising faith in his name; and they were born, not from blood or from a fleshly will or from man’s will, but from God.” (Notice that the context, in verse 11, refers to Jesus’ “own people,” the Jews. As many of them as did receive him when he came to them in the first century became God’s children, with heavenly life in view. The verbs in the text are in the past tense, so this passage is not referring to all people who have become Christians since then.)
Rom. 8:14, 16, 17: “All who are led by God’s spirit, these are God’s sons. The spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are God’s children. If, then, we are children, we are also heirs: heirs indeed of God, but joint heirs with Christ, provided we suffer together that we may also be glorified together.” (At the time this was written it was true that all who were led by God’s spirit were God’s sons whose hope was that they would be glorified with Christ. But this had not always been true. Luke 1:15 says that John the Baptizer would be filled with holy spirit, but Matthew 11:11 makes clear that he will not share in the glory of the heavenly Kingdom. So, too, after the gathering of the heirs of the heavenly Kingdom, there would be others who would serve God as followers of his Son and yet not share in heavenly glory.)

May I say everyone is entitled to their own "dreams & fascinations". Now you did it! You burst their bubbles and rained on their parade!

They do not know and they do not have any assurance, but one thing is sure, they think only JWs can go to heaven or stay here on earth after we die. Eternal life is only to them, that is what they are taught.
