I went through that about 4 yrs ago. My mom, dad, and 6 brothers and sisters are still JWs. I tried to go back and was finally told that after writing one more letter and waiting a couple more weeks, I would be reinstated.
I wrote the second letter and met with the elders only to find out that my bitter ex husband (who lived 3hrs away) had input in the Elder's decision. The elders decided not to reinstate me because my ex did not feel I should be reinstated.
Right then and there, I realized that the elders are not guided by God. They are judging people's hearts with no authority. It's not because I was not reinstated (I eventually would have been), but it was because they allowed my ex to have input in the decision. They also told me that I would have to drop my custody case against my ex.
Good bye cult!

I've been disfellowshipped before. I have also been reinstated. since then, I've had nothing to do with the Witnesses. I've been doing some research and found a lot of interesting things about the organisation and its history. Things that make you go Hmmmm....

A year? There is no set time period, some people clean up their act sooner, others much later.
All Witnesses spend a lot of time "going to all the meetings" so naturally anyone wanting to come back should do the same.
Why do we not speak to them?
1 Cor 5:11- But now I am writing you to quit mixing in company with anyone called a brother that is a fornicator or a greedy person or an idolater or a reviler or a drunkard or an extortioner, not even eating with such a man
2 John 10,11- If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, never receive him into your homes or say a greeting to him. For he that says a greeting to him is a sharer in his wicked works.
Re-instating?
2 Corinthians 2:5-11 Now if anyone has caused sadness, he has saddened, not me, but all of you to an extent—not to be too harsh in what I say. This rebuke given by the majority is sufficient for such a man, so that, on the contrary now, you should kindly forgive and comfort him, that somehow such a man may not be swallowed up by his being overly sad. Therefore I exhort you to confirm your love for him. For to this end also I write to ascertain the proof of you, whether you are obedient in all things. Anything you kindly forgive anyone, I do too. In fact, as for me, whatever I have kindly forgiven, if I have kindly forgiven anything, it has been for your sakes in Christ’s sight; that we may not be overreached by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his designs
All Bible-based.
(Wonder why she asks when she knows all this already. Is she considering.........?)

This "with us or against us" mentality makes me sick. It is the root of division in the world and millions are dying in vain because of it.
If these guys take over, we'll enter back into the middle ages. It will be only a matter of time before blood letting and trepenning (drilling holes in someone's scull if he/she is suspected of mental illness/spirit posession) will be replacing modern medicine.
I will fight this nail and tooth.

Have been disfellowshipped, tried the year long thing, and decided it wasn't worth it.
Glad I'm out of that cult.

I have never been a JW. I believe this tactic of excommunicating is a part of the mind controlling tactics they use to keep people in line.
