OpenOffice is a good freeware program, but if you must have Microsoft Word you can buy Microsoft Works Suite (make sure it is the suite version!) for about $100. that comes with a full version of Word.

As the other answerers said, you can use Open Office. It is freeware, and pretty good from what I've heard. It is compatible with Office and if necessary, you can convert an Open Office document online, free, at www.media-convert.com.
