Call your local sheriff's dept or city police ASAP and file a report for stolen checks and/or forgery.

It is your problem now. If you had that many checks stolen, you should have closed that account too. Did the bank suggest that to you when you did the stop payment? If you tell the bank checks were stolen, they normally recommend closing the account. Folks that don't follow that suggestion tend to end up in the same boat you are now in.

Get the cancelled checks and file the police report. If you have some idea who stole the checks, you may have to pursue them thru the courts.

Had you reconciled your account when you received the statement, you would have caught this earlier and the bank would have been able to help you. Now it's your problem to track down.

do you get your cheques returned to you?? If so, you better get them before they tell you that the physical cheques have been destroyed. That way you can prove the signature is not yours...You need to move this us from the teller level you are currently speaking to..and start demanding to see the manager of the bank....!!! or His boss. That sounds like nonsence. Also, I've never heard of a time limit on stop payments before.

Forget reconciliations, why aren't you watching your accounts on a regular basis to see what is happening?? The bank could make a major mistake..and you will only have 30 days to let them know about it!!!!!!!! Starting today, that is my recommendation. Also, there is a good reason that most companies have 2 required signatures. Someone might be good at forging 1, but forging 2 signatures is next to impossible. Another reason you want to get those physical cheques is you want to see who they are made out to. The guy who stole them and cashed them may have made them out to himself, and cashed them at his own branch.

Your mistake is in not reconciling your account as soon as statements arrive. Most banks have a time limit for disputing any transactions.
