as long as you have the correct replacement [2.5 inch ATA] its as easy as opening the flap
pulling out the drive
unscrewing the protective plates
rescrewing them onto the new drive
returning it to your ps3
closing it up
and formating the utility
done

I havent done itmyself yet, but WILL do it in the future. It explains Step-by-step in the PS3 manual itself how to do it, so, you really shouldnt have any problems. From looking at the manual, its just a case of sliding things out, unscrewing a coupleof screws etc.
What I would advise is - buy a cheap externallHDD.Back up your data onto this periodocially and then when you buy the bigger HD copyeverything onto the external and then back onto the new bigger internal......thats my plans anyway. The PS3 menu gives you the option to copy your hard drive. Its a great machine btw,and Sony deserve more recognition for it.

yes it is, you can either get a 2.5 inch laptop sata drive and in the manual it will tell you how to install the device, really easy and theres videos on you tube which show you how. Or the other option is to get an external hard drive which plugs into the usb port. either way is good and on another note how is your 40gb PS3?

To add to the advice, be careful when removing the screws, they can be in pretty tight and in my experience crumble very easy.

Stephen is right. Make sure that it is a Serial ATA(SATA), as the 2.5" Parallel ATA(PATA) hard drives have pins instead.
