Harlem is NOT as bad as it used to be though I still wouldn't want to be around there at night so that would make it number 1.

Number 2, Washington Heights - Major area for drugs and a lot of fights. Huge Dominican concentration.

Number 3, El Barrio/Alphabet City (tie). Tons of housing projects spell trouble.

If you're going to NYU your going to want to live below 20 something street at least. Look for apartments in the East Village, West Village area. More than likely your going to need a roomate unless your parents are going to pay for you. Crime can happen anywhere in Manhattan, you can get Robbed uptown, downtown, East sdie or West side, really it doesn't matter. Thereare some parts of the Bronx, like the South Bronx that are up and coming. Stay on Campus, if you are new to the City.

Tony's right. Harlem is not as bad as it use to be. The prices in Harlem are skyrocketing right now. But, Chinatown is no place to live, besides the tourist, it's the most unclean place in Manhatten. The Battery Park area is not a real good place to live either. North Manhattan, near the Yakees stadium is kinda run down also.

I wouldn't really want to liev in Chinatown even though I'm chinese becuase it's filled with tourist, lots of cantonese speakers, high prices and the streets aren't as clean as it could be.

in case you're wondering, crime has been down in nyc, so its safer than your city. so there are no "worst" section of manhattan.

and fyi, if former president Bill Clinton could work in Harlem then its not bad a place to live
