I'm 15 years old, and I work out often. For the last 1 1/2 months that I worked out, I have only gotten toned, but I'm not gaining any muscle or weight. I have internet researched whey protein and weight gainers and some say its bad and some say its ok. I have been recommended Cytosport's Cytogainer which has like 600 calories/54 grams of protein per serving. I have also been told that: since kidney's and the liver filter your blood, taking supplements may cause complications. I want to know what is better to build muscle mass SAFELY for someone my age? Which brand is best for me? How much should someone my age take? When should I take it in the day? Gainers, I've been told, have Creatine and Arginine in excess (Cytogainer) which aren't safe for my age. Also, do gainers have steroids in them [I absolutely want to avoid contact with any substances like steroids]. Preferably, I would like advice from a professional [Personal Trainer, doctor, etc.] who actually know about this. Help!

protein powders are perfectly safe for the old and young, male or female. only those allergic to milk products should be wary of them.

I've read that supplementing high amounts of nutrients can be harmful, but only if your kidneys/liver are not working properly. Its best to get a physical to make sure everything is working correctly and that you're in good shape to start a bodybuilding routine.

...No gainers I've seen have any kind of steroids in them...

I take a gainer as my post workout shake. I use 1/2 a serving with some added whey protein. (Comes to about 50g of protein and 500-600 calories)

Make sure you're eating properly/enough and doing a full workout. Also remember that the more muscle you put on, the more you'll have to eat to sustain it.

If you want reliable advice as your parents to help you consult a dietitian and a personal trainer.
