It won't do you any harm at all, garlic has natural ingredients which can help to fight infection. It tends to work better however if the garlic is taken in a digestable state, so chopped, sliced or minced is better. A whole clove will not be digested well or easily. Garlic is not a gaurantee to cure colds but MAY help, it has mild antibiotic properties.
Rubbing sliced garlic on a spot can be helpful too for instance. I shouldn't worry about garlic breath, you can always lace your partners food with it too, he won't notice the smell on you that way and it will do his health good as Garlic is detoxifying and cleansing. Let's face it, garlic breath is still preferable to booze or ciggy breath anyway!
One word of caution however, garlic capsules are a con and a waste of time, if you want the health benefits of garlic only the fresh stuff will do!

Garlic is very good for your immune system so can help prevent you getting a cold but as a cold is caused by bacteria and garlic is anti-bacterial so can help your body to fight the cold.
As for swallowing half a clove being bad for you i would seriously doubt that half a clove is a small amount; you would have to chew it raw to get results. Studies by Garlic Information Studies support it as a natural remedy for cold as reported in The Guardian.

I don't fancy swallowing half a garlic clove as some can be quite large, but a friend of mine also his daughter had breathing difficulties nibbled a garlic clove with most meals, OK their breath probably was strong but they didn't care the main thing they could breath a lot easier, try it it works.

Yes and ...go easy!
Garlic is one of the best things you can take...at any time.
Whole cloves? I would cut it into small (ish) pieces. Cut the clove in half and remove the centre if it has any sign of green...this will make it bitter and it will increase the pungent after smell.
The best way to take it, is with some milk (it lines your stomach) like a tablet a few small pieces on a spoon then a bolt of milk.
Get yourself some parsley to chew on after it will help cancel out any residue of odour.

Garlic is an immune system booster and is an antimicrobial agent as well as an antibacterial agent.
High strength odourless 3,000 mg garlic oil capsules are very useful.
If you consume garlic cloves it would be better to chew them first before you swallow them.

The problem with garlic is the nasty niff problem.
However, there is a solution!
Peel the clove and slice it along its narrow profile. This will expose the green shoot inside.
Remove all of the shoot and discard.
You can now eat the garlic without any more than a temporary breath problem........... easily combated with a slice of bread and butter!

Garlic is good in a million ways, especially for not getting cancer, though you eat it every day, people may tell you that you stink.
