I hate to say, but this can be a virus or warm problem.
However, before you take that as an answer try the step by step approach to check your computer ( I assume it is an XP)
1. Have you installed a software recently? For example, even Norton, iTune, bit torrent have background programs that can slow down your computer. Click Control-Shift-Esc together and it will bring task manager, you will able to see several things in there. One of them is processes. Check the CPU column to see which one is the taking most of your memory.
2. Have you try defragment your hard drive recently? You can find this nice tool in your Accessories menu area ( click start -> all programs -> Accessories -> System tools -> Disk Defragmenter). Try to see the report if you need to defrag your hard drive. In the same menu you will find clean up temporary files. Try that one too while you are in there.
3. Check your hard drive space. May be it is near to full and XP is having difficult put temporary, paging files ( etc.). That can also slow down your computer.
4. Now time to check virus, warms, etc. If you have a virus scanner please make sure it is up to date. Then run the virus scanner. If you don't have one, then you can do a free check up from trendMicro:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/
Another free program is really nice to check bad stuffs is

Hope this will help you to get started.

As you will appreciate there are many reasons why your computer is running slow:

First of all make sure you do not have any malware in the form of viruses or spyware. Run your anti virus and anti spyware programs in order to clear out any beasts.
If you do not have any protection these are available for free:
For anti virus I suggest:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
For anti spyware I suggest:
http://www.superantispyware.com/

Remove junk files by running Ccleaner – free for download from:
http://filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

Your hard disk(s) may be fragmented. Windows has a built in defragmentation program but you can download a third party program for free:
http://www.auslogics.com

Your registry may be cluttered or corrupt. Ccleaner mentioned above also has a registry cleaner. How about downloading another very good free registry cleaner:
http://www.eusing.com

You may have too many applications kicking off at start up. This free download allows you to control what runs at start up:
http://www.glarysoft.com/quick-startup

Your hard disk may be getting full. You need at least 15% of free space for it to operate efficiently. Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs & remove any applications you no longer use. How about removing all those pictures & music that is filling up your hard drive?

Finally, after you have done all the above may need to upgrade your RAM. So that you get the right type of RAM for your system do a free scan at Crucial to determine your RAM.
http://www.crucial.com/ for USA
http://www.crucial.com/uk/?gclid=CM31ls7_zY8CFQjREAodQhNtxg for UK

Good luck with your quest.

These look like the symptoms of high levels of drive fragmentation. Maybe its also very low on free space. Clear your cache, run a disk cleanup and analyze the fragmentation. It acts like a speed killer because of all the extra activity that the drive has to engage in to read files, programs open slow and the PC seems to lag.

PC Maintenance Made Easy
How to get your system running better
© Michael Simpson

Ever wonder why your computer is running slower than it used to? Well, there could be all kinds of reasons for it. Here are a few things you can do to get it running

Here are some things you can do to get your system running a little bit better, or maybe a whole lot faster.

* Delete temporary files from your hard drive.Temporary files are usually the files left over after installing a program and can be safely deleted. To learn more about how to delete them, check out this article.
* Run a thorough scan disk.Scan disk will check your harddrive to make sure that there arent any physical problems with the drive. It can sometimes repair them as well.
* Clean your internet browser cache.Consisting mostly of images that your browser had to download in order to display on a web page you are viewing. Check out this article on how to clear your internet browser cache.
* Perform a virus scan.Make sure your Virus definitions are up to date. Viruses can cause major slow downs in your system by using the CPU to its maximum capacity.
* Check your system for spyware/adware.Websites can install spyware/adware. These things can hijack your computers browser and cause things to run very slow. For a complete explanation of how to use spyware removal tools check out this article.
* Defrag the files on your hard drive.Defrag arranges the files on your hard drive so that they can be accessed more efficiently allowing your hard drive to handle the flow of data more efficiently. To learn how to do this check out this article.
* Clean the dust out of your computer. As crazy as it sounds dust can really cause a problem. To much dust on your heat sinks can allow heat to build up, dust can also clog fans as well. Get rid of dust as much as you can. Be careful when vacuuming however, dont bump into things as that can cause damage.

Hopefully these things should increase the performance of your system.

A clean computer is key to a faster computer. Run the 3 scans below.

Run a virus scan weekly.

Update and run your Anti-Virus program. Don't have one? You can run a free online scan from CA.
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virus...

Run Spybot and SuperAntiSpyware weekly.

Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/...... . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.

Download, update and run SuperAntiSpyware---http://www.snapfiles.com/get/SuperAntiSpyware.html

Now to prevent spyware from being installed in the first place....

Download SpywareBlaster---http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html...
SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.

It's main features include:
- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
- Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.

Now lets clean up your registry.

Run RegScrubXP weekly. Run Cleanup every time you log off.

Download RegScrubXP--http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?d...

Safely cleans junk out of the Windows 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it's original condition. You can make an exclusion list of registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display as problems. You can sift through a list of file extensions, company names, run upon startup programs, Internet Explorer history, and uninstall programs to delete what you think is junk.

Download CleanUp---http://www.stevengould.org/software/clea...

Free disk space, make your computer run better/faster and protect your privacy - all in one easy solution. All for free!

Now lets clean up your disk.

Run a Disk Cleanup 2 times a month. Run Disk Defrag. monthly.

Do a Disk Cleanup and Disk Defrag. You can find both of them by following the path below.
Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Cleanup. Let it do its thing. You can check every box that has something to delete.
Now follow the same path and do a Disk Defrag. Again just let it do its thing.

Now lets tweak your connection.

If your speed is good I would not mess with it by trying to tweak it. If you do tweak once it is done you should not have to do it ever again.

There are many programs out there to do this. I will give you 2 of them.
The first one is TCP Optimizer.

Description: The TCP Optimizer is a free, easy Windows program that provides an intuitive interface for tuning and optimizing your Internet connection. There is no installation required, just download and run.

http://www.download.com/SG-TCP-Optimizer/3000-2155_4-10488572.html

You can get support for the best way to set it up right from their forum http://forums.speedguide.net/

The second one is Cablenut.

Windows XP tested and approved

CableNut is a tool for optimizing your Internet Connection. We have provided a way to tweak any option you may want to in the adjuster. You can load "CableNut Custom Setting" files that are included with the program to tweak your Internet connection.

http://www.cablenut.com/

Again support is available right from their forum.http://www.broadbandnuts.com/index.php?p...

All programs are FREE!

After applying the suggestions above you will have a clean and faster computer. Enjoy.
