i dont want to breed her, i took her in from a family who had her locked in one room as she didnt get on with their other cats and she is about 12 months old i think i recently started to let her out after being told she was spayed but she seems to be gaining weight rather quickly

She is old enough to get pregnant..they usually have their first heat at about 6 months of age. If she is not spayed...get her spayed. You can sometimes see the scare on their abdomen if they have been spayed. If she continues to gain weight...get her to the vet.

I would say four months, and slightly older or younger.

Best thing is to get kitty spayed right away!

Contact your local shelter or humane society for a source of low cost spay/neuter if that is needed.

But don't wait. Thousands and thousands of cats/kittens are killed every day in the US due to overpopulation. So sad. So avoidable.

EDIT: BTW... unlike dogs, you will not see a physical indication of going into heat in cats as they do not physically bleed or spot like a dog does.

Might want to read here, good information:

She can get pregnant as early as 5-6 months, but she should not. It i very dangerous at this age. It's like a girl getting pregnant at 11-12 years old. So you must make sure she doesn't get pregnant so early. Spay her if she goes outdoors. She must be at least 1,5-2 years old to get pregnant, but it's best to spay her anyway, because of diseases and cats overpopulation.

Some cats go into heat as early as 3 to 4 months. So when she goes into heat she can get pregnant.

Physically many cats are able to get pregnant when they are only six or seven months old. Others however are one year old when they have their first heat cycle. So it depends on your cat.
