You should not get a dog for a guard dog. Owning a guard dog is like owning a gun -- it's intended for your protection, but most of the time it's the owner or the owner's friends that get hurt. Instead, you should get a friendly dog that will still sound an alarm when someone approaches the property. Aggressiveness is NOT necessary.
A dog that is dominant, active, and boisterous would be an extremely difficult dog to train and handle. You should look for a more level-headed dog that is still active and playful but not uncontrollable. Trust me, the joys of having a dog that is completely uncontrollable wear out FAST.
Since the breeds that you mention are really better off in the hands of experienced dog owners only, you should be looking for a good mutt from your local shelter. The shelter staff can help you find a dog that meets your wants. I recommend getting an adult dog, since puppies require a LOT of work and research put into them.

The issue is that dogs are poor generalizers - it's not that the dog is "sneaky, greedy" etc, but that they have no intrinsic sense of morality or "rightness" and so only think something is "bad" if it has bad consequences. If it has never had bad consequences except with a human in the room, then how on earth are they to know that the rules still apply with the human out of the room? You need to train in such a way that corrections and rewards occur when the dog does not think you are present - i.e. hiding around the corner. Read here https://tr.im/Oy0xT
I personally owned a Labrador Retriever (read: chow hound) that could be left 6" from a hot dog in a sit-stay for half an hour and not touch it - the word was "mine" and it meant that you don't touch that, even if I am not in the room, even if whatever, you DO NOT touch that. You could leave a plate of food on the floor for hours and not only would she not touch it, she would also keep the other animals (dogs and cats) from touching it.
In all probability, these dogs studied were just not properly trained/proofed before the experiment. With "proofing" to set them up and catch them in the act to give

why puppies? not being funny but shelters are overrun with perfectly fine dogs. with the discription you've given of what your looking for, i suggest a staffordshire bull terrier. the bonus here is there are loads in rescue centres as people cant cope with the dominance side, i hope your not one of those people who go, o no, not a staffy. do some research on the breed. they sound exactly like what your looking for. i do urge you to check out rescue centres tho. so many dogs looking for a forever home. there's a great website for them, check that out and ask a few questions.
edit, if you want a list of breeders, look on the kennel club website. they have lists there.

While researching (hurray for being so responsible and wise about adopting a dog-or two!) you may want to look at how active the breed is, if you plan on a family eventually, and where you live.
Boxer's are great family dogs. They are protective of their family and gentle with children. They are very energetic and need loads and loads of exercise! Getting two will help and training will help even more!
Pit Bulls, if socialized from the time you adopt them and take them to training are wonderful family dogs too.
Both breeds are very loving and fun to be with. Knowing the breed, and understanding dog behavior will help you choose the right dogs for you.
Congrats on your new additions!

No reputable breeder will sell a pup this time of year. The majority of 'christmas puppies' end up in shelters by easter. Instead of getting a dog for Christmas why don't you get the general supplies you need (leash, food dishes, bed, crate) and maybe even some books on the breeds you like so you can help further your research on which breed you like the best and get the dog at a later date.

I would get 1 puppy first. Contact breeders and ask and the visit. No one can really tell you what to get.

I agree- get the puppy NOW, and get her/them settled in before Christmas, or wait until mid January. Getting puppies for Christmas is a TERRIBLE idea- you'll be busy, the dogs will be stressed, everything will be chaotic, there are all sorts of choking/poison hazards around the holidays... it's just an awful, awful idea. Please, consider doing it before or after the actual holiday.
