The constitution spells out a process for the decleration of war that worked just fine when it took a month to get the word out to everyone. What doesn't work is seeing 1100 Russian nukes launching on a 20min flight to US soil & then calling congress to ask for a debate on a resolution to authorize force. So, Congress (not the President) chose to pass the War Powers Act. The gist of that is Congress give up the President the right to declare war. Instead, the President can respond at a moments notice to whatever any situation may require, but he's restricted to a certain number of troops (I want to say 180,000), and a certain length of time (I think 180 days), before he has to go back to congress for a formal decleration of war or authorization of force.
Now, that's what the law SAYS. What we actually do is get permission from congress in advance in the form of a resolution authorizing use of force under XYZ conditions. Such a resolution is totally meaningless legally, but very important politically in the balance of power.
I'm not a huge fan of the UN, but you may want to check yourself on that. UN resolutions mean nothing in US law. They merely represent the political support of the world community. The President still asks congress from authorization to use force, or more correctly it's authorization to spend the money.
And war on drugs? The US govt isn't making money on that. More like spending a ton with not nearly a strong enough result. That's all politics. The public doesn't have the political will (balls) to actually change the situation. They would rather have their nice cushy lifestyle & maybe access to drugs if they choose, and don't care that it keeps oppressive govts in power, exploits millions upon millions of people in poverty, and causes more violence than all the oil in the mid-east.
You want to fix the problems of the world, let us take the gloves off & wreck some shop like we're trained to do. In the meantime, deal with your political concerns with politicians & start supporting the troops that you pay to break things as efficiently as possible.

Hey... you should actually support the troops (meaning Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors and Marines) no matter what, but you don't have to support the idea of the war.
The troops are everyday people just like you, except we're risking our lives as part of our jobs.
So support the troops whether you agree with the reasons we're in other countries or not. Without the military, it wouldn't be possible for you to sit at your computer today and ask questions here - for centuries, this country's military men and women have made sure that you and everyone else who lives here stays FREE.
The troops don't have a choice when they're getting shipped out to a foreign country. We just go and that's the end of it - no room for argument, whining, or anything else. But we all joined so that we could do our part in making sure that you and everyone else in this country never has to worry about getting attacked, being captured and used as a slave, or any of the other horrible thing that other nations do to each other.
So support the troops - please. Again, that doesn't mean you have to support the war(s). It just means that you recognize our willingness to die so that you can keep living without fear. You can keep living free.

As a veteran, I will say thank you for your support. My father, 3 uncles, several cousins and I all fought wars so you could ask inane questions like the one you just asked. While I do not support your question, I will fight to the death to defend your right to ask it. Would you do that for me? I retired from the US Air Force and am now a 100% disabled veteran. I make enough money to scrape by. I am below the poverty line in my home state of Georgia. The US Government will not fund the Veteran's Administration for all the eligible veterans there are out there. If you are under 50% disabled you are put on a waiting list to get medical help at a VA hospital.
As for Declaring War the Congress gave up that right with the War Powers Act. This allows the President to issue orders for the military to fight in any conflict he chooses. The only action Congress can take is to cut off funding.
If you do not like current policy, vote. Vote the incumbent out and put someone in that you agree with more. The military does not want war. They are the first and last to die because of war. They would much rather train. As for occupying 130 plus countries, the last time I checked we had bases in about 60 countries and were occupying zero.
Put your money where you mouth is and see how much the military men and women are screwed by their own government and their own people.

Supporting the troops is a spin that the White House has put on Iraq trying to make people feel if they disprove of Iraq they are not being supportive of the troops.
What a shame they use men and women in the Armn Forces that way. For the White Houses and republicans own purposes and to justify thier choices.
One thing does not have to do with other, its like choosing apples and oranges,

I support our troops 100% - absolutely!
I do NOT support this unconstitutional, illegal, unjustified, immoral 'war' against another sovereign nation that in no way threatened, provoked or attacked the United States.
Bush lied to Congress, hoodwinked a grief-stricken American public, and conned our valiant soldiers into belieiving there was honorable purpose for this 'war' when, in fact, it was initiated for three really lame reasons:
1. The Bush family had a personal vendetta against Saddam Hussein ever since George H.W. Bush was criticized, ridiculed and humiliated for 'not finishing the job' and ousting Hussein during Desert Storm;
2. Cheney coveted all that cheap, easily-accessible OIL swimming underneath Iraq's sands;
3. Our giant U.S. military-industrial complex [which Eisenhower warned us about] needed a new 'war' to boost sagging profits from too many years of peace.
So, Bush blew up the Twin Towers [that helped an old family friend escape mounting losses], 'declared war' on Iraq in violation of our Constitution, and turned America into a police state where citizens are presumed guilty until proven innocent.
From Day One, this obscene 'war' was all about OIL and WAR PROFITEERING. 675,000 Iraqis and 3,900 U.S. soldiers have sacrificed their lives so that a handful of wealthy elitists, industrialists, oil barons and power brokers can become wealthier and more powerful.
It is the worst deception ever perpetrated on the American people. -RKO- 11/22//07

I think you have to ask the question what would the world be like right now if we did not have a presence around the globe. Do you honestly believe we would all be hugging trees and singing Kum -Ba-YA? And Bambi is actually alive in the forest. And Muslims would be happily hugging Jews? And South Koreans would be living in communist bliss saying propaganda chants about their fearless leader? People in the middle east would like living under the yoke of their despotic dictators saying WOW aint life grand!! Europeans would just adore doing the Nazi salute and half of Asia would love bending over and bowing to the RISING SUN of Japan. Communism or fascist states would rule the world and IF the USA was still standing by then you would be fighting for your life. And by then you would'nt have a chance to make a choice that hard won freedom has bestowed upon you,whether to fight or not would you.

By all means do not support the politicains but the troops follow orders. Not to mention every single one has made the commitment to take a bullet for your freedom. You are mis-placing your blame! No soldier has ever declared war.

you know, it sounds af if all your gripes are politacal ones. Voice your disagreeances against the politicians, not us. We are doing our jobs over here, serving out the orders of the people YOU elected. Don't take your anger out on us, you need to seperate the mantality of "politics" and "military". You think I enjoy being away from my two boys for Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's and such? Take your voice to congress and the elected officials. I cannot change the way things are, neither can my troops over here. Personally, it's your choice to support us or not, but vent your anger in the right direction.
