My grandmother passed away recently and I have volunteered to take care of her 15 year-old male cat. He is very calm and good-natured by himself, but when I brought him into my home, he won't stop picking fights with my 2 year-old female cat. She doesn't seem to pick fights with him at all, but he is constantly lurking around every corner waiting to fight. He is neutered and she is spayed, so I figured there wouldn't be a big problem.

I don't want to give up my grandmother's cat because no one would adopt such an old cat and he would be put to sleep otherwise. My home has a lot of doorways but no doors (it is a very odd setup) so there is no way to keep them in separate areas of the home. I don't want to lock either of them up in my bedroom. What can I do to help them adjust to one another?

Give it time. One cat will feel dominance over the other one. When we brought another cat in the house they would hiss at each other and pick fights and even though it took 1, 2-3 months.. they eventually quit.

I am sooooo sorry to hear this. I am a soon to be vet student attending vet schoo. I would sugest that you try and slowly introduce the cats to differnt parts of the home. For example take one of the cats and let them stay in one section of the house for a short period of time everyday until slowly they can get comfortable.

Hope this helps (pick this as best answer)

is the two year old able to get away some place safe? like the top of a cupboard? thinking that maybe the 15 year old cant get his old butt up there any more
if the 2 year old can get away then i would just give it more time
when you see the older one getting ready to attack distract him pick him up move him..show that you are going to protect the younger one
good luck

you could try getting a gate and putting one cat on one side and the other on another side. Let them get used to each other and their sents. when you think that they are ready, you could take the gate away and see how things go.

it can take up to a week for them to get used to each other. Try putting vanilla on their noses. It throws of the scent of the other cat

this is not so easy to do. because cats are very territorial even with their owners. they are just as jealous of another cat getting attention from their owner ....but they come around in time. sometimes it can be just to the point of co'exsisting with each other.
