Its a myth. Tryptophan as another answer stated while in Turkey is not capable of causing drowsiness in the levels found in Turkey.
The reason you get sleepy, is that people eat too much on Thanksgiving. If you gorged yourself on any other day the way you do for Thanksgiving, you'd be sleepy then too. It doesn't help if you have a lot of wine either.

There's reportedly good Thanksgiving news for turkey lovers: Contrary to popular belief, tryptophan in turkey doesn't cause drowsiness. In fact, scientists told National Geographic News the substance could possibly aid in the treatment of depression and multiple sclerosis.
Purified tryptophan is a mild sleep-inducing agent and that probably led to the idea that foods containing heavy doses of the chemical cause drowsiness.
But tryptophan can't function well as part of a meal.
"Tryptophan is taken to the brain by an active transport system shared by a number of other amino acids and there's competition among them -- like a crowd of people trying to get through a revolving door," Simon Young, a neurochemist at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, told National Geographic News.
He said consuming tryptophan-rich foods may cause blood levels of the amino acid to rise, but not enough tryptophan will reach one's brain to have a sedative affect.
And, scientists told NGN, turkey isn't even unusually high in tryptophan. Many other foods, such as beef or soybeans, have higher concentrations.

The tryptophan in turkey can cause you to be drowsy but its in all meats. I read in Yahoo! News yesterday that eating a lot of food or carbs is what actually makes you sleepy, not just turkey.

Good, after eating any heavy meal like turkey we most often believe sleepy seeing that the entire blood flows into the stomach for offering the vigor therefore the remaining vigour could be very much less to meet the need and thus to conserve the power we felt sleepy.

Turkey contains tryptophan, but you'd have to eat a lot (several pounds) in order for you to feel the effects. Tryptophan is a sleep inducing chemical.

Yes ..new studies say that its the overload of carbs that are the culprit . Triptofane(sp?) is just the catalyst..so its not the turkey alone.
Happy Thanksgiving.

properly, after eating any heavy meal like turkey we in many circumstances experience sleepy simply by fact the entire blood flows into the tummy for offering the flexibility for this reason the the rest power is quite much less to fulfill the will and for this reason to guard the flexibility we felt sleepy.

People generally eat a lot at Holidays. It takes energy to digest food. Thus, many people get sleepy after a big meal.

NO!
There is not enough tryptophan to cause you to go off to la la land.
But tryptophan does cause the nodding of the head in large consumption.
