Is it the opposite side or the same side?

If a front leg is injured, either side could be affected. When a rear leg is injured it's almost always the opposite side that has the abnormality. It's called contralateral effect. I found this article that might answer your question better than I could. I hope this helps. Just scroll down to the paragraph on injuries.

I have seen it with both Deer and Elk when I was a Hunting Guide In Wyoming . Also if the Pedistle of the antler is injured during or befor the growth cycle the animal will reproduce the deformity and exagerate it every year after.

I have always heard that.....I once killed a deer that had one back leg off at the "knee", and only a short spike-I don't remember which side. The other antler was a nice four, so the deer would have been an eight.
