We forego charities and do it ourselves.
In the winter time, we head downtown after midnight when all the homeless people are getting ready for another nite sleeping on the sidewalk and we hand out blankets and warm coffees.
When we first started doing this, we were overwhelmed with requests for SOCKS, so we then added socks to our "to bring" list.
Here's some other ideas:
You could donate children's clothing and toys, beauty accessories, and educational materials to women's shelters--Mothers often find themselves in shelters with their children hiding from abusive spouses. They cannot go back and forth to pick things up from home that they've forgotten.
You could start a community club--perhaps a walking club for seniors to help them get out and socialize or you could help coordinate outtings for them too OR, you could help seniors learn basic computer skills so that they can converse with others around the globe!. Seniors are often lonely and feel isolated and forgotten.

my local hospital takes books and magazines all the time, they pass them out in waiting rooms and in even in some patient rooms where the patient can and wants to read. This time of year the Salvation Army and Samaritan's Purse are very good places for giving money, you know its going where its supposed to be going. Any place that takes winter clothing is another good place this time of year, thrift stores and good will stores will need winter clothing for the months ahead.

It's a lot of ways you can help other people, sometimes it is not easy because all people don't want to be helped all you can do is try. By offering money, time, patience and a lot of love.
