My son has a remote control car. Every time we press the remote to the `TV` the car starts going. Why is this?

They use the same wavelength to control each item. TV remotes usually use infrared light. Look at the end of the remote that you aim at the TV - it usually has a little light bulb on it. Look at the car's controller - if it has something similar, it probably uses infrared light, too.
