Mat 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter (Greek: pet'ros, Πέτρος a stone aka Cephas), and upon this Rock (petra, πέτρα , meaning upon Jesus Christ Himself) I will build My church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Try again.

Sorry......blessedrobert......

all your rambling does not show Peter = petra (ROCK)

FROM THE VERY MOUTH OF JESUS:
John 1:42 And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, He said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone (Note Greek: pet'ros, Πέτρος). Do you believe what that came out of the very mouth of Christ Jesus says? Do you disagree with the very words of Jesus Christ?? Have you got any problem with Jesus’ interpretation? According to the Scriptures, Jesus affirms that Simon Peter is Cephas, a stone (Greek: pet'ros, Πέτρος).

You are correct! there are something like 45 scripture verses in the Bible whereby the Lord is called "The Rock" If you have a concordance, you will be able to pick them out fairly quickly. In the instance where the Lord spoke to Peter because of his revelation, Jesus firstly calls Peter by his name and then addresses him by a new name, Peter, which in the Greek translates to Pebble or tiny little stone. Jesus then goes on to tell him the He (Jesus) will build His church in Himself "The Rock" The Lord would never establish His church on mortal man as Peter is dead and gone. Peter was a pillar of the church but certainly not the rock on which it was formed.

Although there are some groups that would make Peter the rock, and therefore some important leader in the church, of course it isn't so. The "rock" referred to in Matthew 16 is Peter's CONFESSION, not Peter himself.

Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

Not many verses past, he calls Peter the devil.

Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."

The rock is that which can not fail, the confession, not the man.

"On Christ the solid rock I stand
all other ground is sinking sand."

Nope. Jesus called him "a stone" in Greek, and then went on to say "upon this rock I will build my church". He was talking about Himself, not Peter. Peter was not the first pope, Peter was not the rock on which the church is built. The church's foundation is Jesus Christ, the Rock of our salvation.

I found Peter to be very two faced, if indeed Jesus did mean that he would build his church upon such traits, I can certainly see why he also predicted that his followers would be persecuted. Even after the crucifiction there is a story about him entering the carriage of a eunich whom he converted then appeared miles away afterward; what do you suppose that was all about, did he or didn't he have strength of character? Methinks hereis a mistranslation.

Upon this rock I will build my church.Matt 16:18
I stand corrected. But wonder the point. Trying to be helpful but perhaps that's not what you're looking for is it? Are not stones just small rocks? Perhaps I'm not altogether honest but I do try to be. Not offended but was a little shocked. I love Jesus more than anything. I'd die for my faith. I'm certainly not a Bible scholar. But I know so many eager ones who know less than me. So I'm sharing what I know. Thanks for the correction.

I think you may be confusing two different time periods. Although it would be interesting to know if the disciples were also time travelers.

Jesus wasn't talking about the person, he was referring to his faith as a rock.
