This is the one Mom made- so good, so comforting! - hm, baked beans would be really good on the side!
Comfort mac and Cheese
1 1/2 cups elbow macaroni
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
3/4 cup milk, warmed
3/4 cup light cream, warmed
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 cup diced ham
1/2 cup green pepper
2 1/2 cups grated sharp cheese
Salt to taste
Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter a 1 quart casserole and set aside.
Boil macaroni according to package directions. Drain and put in casserole. Set aside.
Melt butter In a small sacuepan over medium heat. When butter bubbles, whisk in flour, stirring constantly. Cook, stirring, for one minute.
Gradually stir in warm milk and cream. Cook, stirring, until mixture thickens, about 2 to 3 minutes. Do not bring to a boil.
Remove from heat and add cayenne, and 2 cups cheese, ham, and green pepper. Stir until cheese is melted. Pour over macaroni in casserole. Stir well to combine. Garnish with remaining cheese, and dot with additional butter and bread crumbs.
Bake in preheated 350 ° F oven for 25 to 30 minutes.
Serve:s 4 to 6

Mine is elbow or seashell macaroni with a can of diced tomatoes, butter, salt and pepper. Yum! My mom used to make this for me when I wasn't feeling good.
