The history of immigration to America shows it over and over again - the "Know Nothings," "no dogs or Irish allowed," "the Yellow Peril," "degradation of the Anglo-Saxon Race," "boat people stealing American tax dollars while true Americans can't get help." Around 1978, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors ordered a study to "expose" the tax burden created by "illegal" immigrants - and then suppressed the embarrassing results: illegals contributed more to the economy than they cost. It's time Lou Dobbs and all the rest of the vicious minority of Americans screaming about immigration told the truth: They are haters. They hate immigrants. "Illegal" and the entire debate is a cover-up. Read Oscar Handlin's "The Uprooted" for a sociological study of this consistent thread in American history. Read T.C. Boyle's "Tortilla Curtain," or an older book, "Chicano!" We need to do something about the issue, but hatred, expulsion and oppression are not the way.

And ow by the way - anyone notice that the haters are practically illiterate? Immigrants work harder to learn our language than native born do.

Some answers have been relatively thoughtful altho I have a diff view - and lots more experience. I tought English as a second language in San Francisco, taught in Mexico and worked in Berlin in the "economic miracle," and have been involved in public policy in California, Florida, Colorado and at a national level. I lived and worked among illegals in the U.S. for 40 years. Lou Dobbs' wife is similar to many U.S.-born Hispanic people who find this issue extremely disquieting. The ones who say "illegal" is the only issue are NOT addressing the truth - that our immigration policy and programs are BROKEN, that our economy demands the labor of the immigrants whether legal or no, and that U.S. foregin policy CAUSES many of the conditions that spur illegal entry here. The consistent thread here in fact is that a loud U.s. minority does not want many immigrants to the U.S. and will use any excuse to prevent immigration or throw people out.

L.A. County Supervisor Mike Antonovich led the drive to get that report produced. I was working in public affairs then and had to deal with the conseuqences of Antonovich's study. It obviously is not available on the Internet. As for the numbers of people illegally entering the U.S., proportionately it is about the same as 30 years ago. I KNOW about liars with statistics. I also know first-hand the lives of terror and fear that today's illegals live, that the so-called social burden of illegals is mis-representated and manipulated, and that the PRECISE conditions that affected the L.A. study at that time prevail today. This is all a major cultural reaction to large numbers of "different" people entering the society in a short time and you anti-immigration people REFUSE to learn the lessons of history.

"The ENTIRE forest is ablaze behind us while we stamp out this small brush fire."
Simply put:
"Watch the bright shiny object folks." (the trick is done under the table, away from all un-suspecting, un-knowing, un-educated boobs.)
I've got dinner to put on the table but I'll be coming back to this, but here's a bone for ya haters.
You ever think the wall is just a diversion? I strongly suspect that that wall is nothing more than a boundary to keep AMERICAN's IN the country. Imprisoned.
WHY?!?!
If we can't leave we are absolutely at the mercy of a highly suspect administration whose very "election" is beyond suspicious. (TWICE I might add)
A comment to the poster who said Lou Dobb's Hispanic wife is against illegals....Another product of the ruling class. People that are trying to become a member often metamorphosis into "sheeples", denying their very CULTURE, just to gain admittance. (Sociology 101) (My own Hispanic heritage romantic love interest exhibits the same trait) He is an American and an honorable, decorated, Marine (OO RAH!!) though. (And pretty easy on the eyes as well, as many Hispanics are!!)
So off to the kitchen, because this year I'm very grateful that there is HOPEFULLY only one more year of this insanity and that makes this ATHEIST want to drop to the knees and thank ANY power for the reprieve from what is quickly and startlingly becoming Germany all over again. (In this land that I love and that my own Irish ancestors had to fight for dignity just to become a part of.) So dinner is on me, this year anyway.
And just so you know, I'm an honorable Marine as well. I pledged to defend this country against all enemies, foreign and DOMESTIC. The REAL WAR is internal, our enemies were "elected."
VOTE!!
PEACE.
Happy Thanksgiving

If we have such a hatred why then do we allow more immigration then any other country in the world?
We have about 40 million foreign born CITIZENS and another 12-20 million illegal immigrants. Those who came here legally would probably disagree with you. Only a very small amount ever go back to their home country - that is indicative of a group of satisfied people.
I don't HATE immigrants but I do want all immigration to stop until we have the overwhelming costs under control. If we fail to control the vast numbers, our childrens and grandchildrens future will be bleak. This country will not be a nice place to live when we reach 600 million (and that will happen in a few decades at our current pace).
To me it is simply a numbers game. I understand that we cannot continue at this pace and only a person without foresight could ever feel this country will be a better place when the population hits 600 million. If numbers that high were a good thing then people would be flocking to China and India.

I am not sure your "question" even warrants a response but here goes anyway. Americans do not have a problem with persons from any country who come here "legally" and assimilate to our culture and learn our language. We do however have a "problem" with anyone who comes here and demands special treatment. Its not racial hatred what we hate is the fact that you demand so much of the American people. You demand we speak spanish WE the people DEMAND you speak English. You demand we give you all the benefits of a USA CITIZEN we DEMAND you earn that right!!-------1978 is not 2007 hospitals are shutting down and the public school and social services system in California are overwhelmed by "illegals". It is costing the state of California millions and millions weekly just to support people who have no right to be here in the first place. ----FACT illegals are a drain on the economy and the social services of this country. FACT Lou Dobbs is not in the minority with his opinions about "illegals" the overwhelming majority of Americans rejected "amnesty" not Lou Dobbs. FACT the overwhelming majority still do!! -----Turn it twist it spin it shape it anyway you want. In the end the American People still know your an INVADER!. We dont care if your brown white yellow green purple or poka dotted your just "illegals". Make us try to believe your NOT! The American people are'nt buying your twisted logic anymore!

Daily I deal with immingrants. Some legal, some illegal. The legal ones have nothing to hide, are law abiding, can produce documentation when asked, file taxes, do everything by the book. I have no problem with these folk. They are doing their best and most that I have meet are actually trying to learn English. Some of these folks are on public assistance, but at least their paying in as well. I trust these people because the last thing they want is to be deported or get in trouble.
The other group, when asked to produce documentation, will provide you with a forged documents, someone elses SSN, - this is called identity theft, and can ruin the life of the person whose identity they stole. They work for cash, so they don't pay federal income or social security tax. (Their employers are just as guilty of tax ivasion as they are IMO). Will file false tax returns with thier forged documents to get a refund back and also receive public assistance. When caught, they penalty is a slap on the risk and they just go somewhere else and do it again. Crime is high among them, as they commit crimes against those here legally and to the native population, and law enforcement turns a blind eye to what goes on. I could go one for a couple of hours about this but space does limit.
To me this isn't a matter of hate. Its a matter of Law and Order, which civilization must have in order to function.

No I think your straining to find anything to support your ignorance.
Look up illegal in the dictionary. Not a real complicated issue come here properly or don't come.
And don't start with we are all immigrants Because the various immigration laws we are Enforcing all stem from the changes made to the Immigration and Naturalization Act around January 1941.
Further more The bill of rights gives congress the power to regulate Immigration and International commerce. So have your congressmen change the law or stop complaining

Lou Dobbs is married to a Hispanic woman and she agrees with him about illegal immigration. Apparently, nobody knows what to do about the situation. If Mexico wants open borders, then why don't they let people cross their border without any paperwork and take up residence there?
Nations have sovereignty and their laws should be respected. If people are truly looking for safety, that is one thing, but most coming here are just looking for money to send home. Some admit they don't even like it here or respect our country.
Many of the angry responses about it are due to the fact that it is now up to the states to deal with what is happening within their borders and to their citizens because the feds, who are supposed to be responsible for this, refuse to address it. Then the states are reprimanded for making laws that the feds are supposed to be enforcing. It is a very sad situation for the illegals as well as the citizens of the U.S.

You have used a combination of truths, half truths, and some that hold no truth whatsoever, to be kind.
I will limit myself to one of your "half truths". I know not of the study you "cite" regarding the tax burden created by illegal aliens, since you don't state your source. Regardless, even if it's on the up and up, it's 30 YEARS OLD!!! Is that the most recent "study" you can find? You ARE aware we had an amnesty in 1986, 8 years after this "study"?? You are aware that the number of illegal immigrants in the country today is MUCH MUCH greater now than it was then??

http://idexer.com/2007/09/30/report-illegal-aliens-cost-la-county-taxpayers-over-1-billion-a-year.html

Here's a couple of links that differ from what you are claiming.
I can pick your post apart point by point later.
However, I will provide actual LINKS that are a big newer than 30 years old.
Here's one other point...our immigration laws are not "broken". WE accept more legal immigrants than any other country on EARTH. If OURS is "broken", as you claim, what do you think of other countries policies, such as the one in this link?? Perhaps we should enforce our borders and our immigration laws as they do, and give you a LEGITIMATE complaint!!

BTW, MY WIFE and her entire family are recent LEGAL immigrants, and they, as well, resent illegal aliens....NOT "foreigners" or "immigrants.

I wouldn't go as to say its a hatred by all people who are against illegal immigrates its the law,you are right there are those who go overboard like Dobbs and others but many of us feel that as long as people enter our country legally W elcome to the USA.but to sneak in and hide makes one wonder what the intentions are of those coming in Remember many Al Queada members came through Mexico and the results were attack on America. Many employers hire illegals and use them to help there cause not the cause of those who come.If we were to go to another country we would have to go by there laws and become legal to be a citizen there. Its no difference here come in legally we will welcome you, hide sneak, then you must go back and try it the right way.

We can't help who chooses to break our laws. We have no duty to subsidize the poor of other countries at the expense of our own country. They don't want to pay for our children's education and health care, why should we pay for theirs to the point where those services fail our own children and sick?
You can point to all the past wrongs you like, but won't find any country better, including those sending the most illegal immigrants. In fact, if those countries were better, why are their people coming here?
Meanwhile the current issue is unsustainability mixed with discomfort with an imposed rate of cultural change, which, being in our homeland, would completely wipe out our culture. It is no more 'wrong' to be uncomfortable with a rate of imposed cultural change from those here above immigration quotas than it is for them to want to keep their own culture, and if they didn't, the issue wouldn't even arise. In fact, it is more wrong for them, since they weren't invited and chose to come to a country where the culture was different.
However, the language bit is because what language we taught in schools has been eviscerated for our own children to provide ESL and services for those illegally here. At middle school graduation our children are the only kids in the room NOT bilingual in LA, for example. When my grandparents, my parents and I went through the school, we had a choice of languages, but they have all been cut as schools focus desparately on the failing students, removing funding from those who can even 'get by.'
So only those NOT our children can get 'bilingual required' jobs unless they take intense language courses at a less linguistically friendly age, and that requires more education than our poor and lower middle class can afford. So they can't get supervisory jobs in their own country because the FOREIGNERS won't learn the language of the country they came to.
This is unfair and has nothing to do with dislike of other cultures. It has to do with who we think our government should be looking out for, first.
