My friend went thru such a similar experience last year. He would be around for 2 weeks and go missing for a few days and appear again. She has no idea of where he is staying or where he is working. She only has his contact number and he doesnt answer her calls at times. He would give reasons such as he was out of town for some family commitments or work purpose.
There was this day when she was out with her ex-classmate and she saw him with another girl. She hid nearby and called his handphone. She was really heartbroken when she saw the guy looking at his handphone and putting it back into his pocket without answering her call.
He called her back a week later and said that he had to rush out of town for some work purpose and just back that evening.

Did he disappear completely, or did he simply stopped acknowledging you?
He might just be shy about revealing his feelings and is now hiding from you because he fears you might reject him. If you are bold enough to make the next move, talk to him and tell him how much you appreciated his letter, and that you would like to try dating at first (that is of course assuming that you also like him).
If you do not like him like he likes you, then be honest and say that while you are flattered, you don't share his feelings. Try to say this in the nicest way possible so that he doesn't feel too bad, even though he WILL feel a little down.

OK.... first off LOVE ??? Please don't consider loving any one till you are older, so you have something to compare it with. Some guys say things to "make love" not for love. As far a the disappearing, Tell him to quit playing games and show he cares about you, you don't have time for stupid crushes. Do you? Maybe you should get some opinions about the guy from some friends... not just girl friedns. Don't make any choices due to your friends only. In the end its up to your judgement.
PLAY GAMES or BE IN LOVE?

Appearing and disappearing after that kind of statement is
a red flag. Maybe he's enboldened to tell you that only when
he's high on drugs or he could be certifiable. Ignore this
instability completely...something's wrong. Fast forward
to the reality of someone who's normal.

He tells you he loves you, then keeps disappearing! I suspect you already know the answer to your question, and are simply seeking confirmation.
Get rid of him - for good!

Real, true love doesn't act like this. I can guarantee you that he doesn't love you. He may like you a lot or even lust after you, but that's not love.
Love cherishes you, watches out for your best and takes care of you. When you find someone who treats you like that then you'll know for sure that it's love.
Happy Thanksgiving!
