In other words, if people stopped volunteering due to the shameful treatment our wounded soldiers are receiving & other objections. Would they then initiate a mandatory draft? Would there be a revolution?

The president indeed declares war, congress just has to approve it.

I doubt that the Congress would vote to reinstate the draft and the President can't make another lie fly like he did to get us into Iraq in the first place. Congress is onto him now. (Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.) There won't be a Revolution and he's too close to the end of his term anyway. Maybe he and Dick Cheney and their families could go fight. And then when wounded, fight with the VA system for proper care like I've had to do for my son. Man! Would I love to see them get a taste of what they so readily dish out.

As has been stated, the President doesn't declare war, Congress does.

Also, draft is mandatory. It's conscription. The options before you're called are only choice of service. After you're called, you only have two options... Army, or prison.

People complain about mercenaries fighting instead of our troops. But they refuse to alleviate the situation by enlisting to assist the troops they profess to support. "If people stopped volunteering"? I'm sure there are quite a few people actually volunteering. But I see some of them just selling their bodies for a few bucks and some benefits. Look at the posts here. "Where can I get the highest sign-on bonus?" (What ever happened to serving because you love your country?) "How can I best avoid having to fight?" (Don't join. What do you think he military does?) "What specialty will get me the best job on the outside?" (Haven't even gotten in and already thinking about getting out.)

A draft? That would have to come from Congress too. And they're too busy caring about their cushy jobs and under the table kickbacks to worry about the country. If they really cared about their country, we'd have a draft now. We have a lot of lazy, spoiled, complacent, self-centered kids in this country. They've been given everything. And that for which one pays little, one tends to value little. I've actually heard people who are qualified to be in the military say, "I don't have to serve. My grandpa served in WW II." They'll go to the movies with their friends and each will pay about $50 for admission and snacks. I guess to them the movie and snacks are of more importance than their freedoms. A draft would be kind an incentive for these lazy, spoiled, complacent, self-centered kids off their back sides and doing something constructive with their lives. I'm not talking about kids from 0 through 17... or whenever they're able to get through school. I'm talking about the kids between 18 and 24. That gives an 18-year old a chance to get a degree and apply for an officer's position. But everybody in this country needs to serve it. If you're afraid to take a life... become a medic and save them. If you're too scared to do even that... or if you fall back on your religion, join the Peace Corps. But get off your butt and do something for your country.

Sadly most of Congress is just like these kids. So, at present, we have no draft.

With a draft, less money would be spent on trying to entice people to join, and more would be available to take care of them after they join.

Revolution? Hardly. There is no cohesiveness in the population. There are a few maniacs with weapons, but the police can handle them... and they don't even need to call in the military. Besides, the people don't have the guts to support their country, which is pretty easy; they wouldn't have the guts it would take to fight it... which has to be a major and dangerous undertaking.

Odd that you used that phraseology. That was a war-protest slogan from the 1960s... "What if there were and nobody came?" Are they using it again? If so, it confirms my suspicion. Protesters haven't had an original thought in over 40 years.

Do not blame the president, Congress pays the bills. The media has harped on Walter Reed, but what they don't tell you is that that was a hospital that was CLOSING, when we started to see a lot of casulties, they had to keep it open, but because of the expected closing, there were problems paying to get the buildings ready (most were closed up and unused.) Maybe you need to go to the Local VA and see what we do for those guys. To call how we treat them as shamful, is an unjust insult to all the men and women, many who are vets themselves, that are working right now in VA Hospitals.

"What would happen if the President declared war and no one CAME?"

An interesting question. It reminds me of the time the President unilaterally committed the nation to war (without actually declaring war) without real congressional backing.
Why, the people were so confused about why they were fighting that war in a little-known region halfway around the world - they could not even grasp the reasons!

Wars, drafts, and revolutions. Don't you just love our country?

The recruiters are having a lot of trouble making their quotas at this time. There are also many who are AWOL. That could be what is happening. It sure makes it hard on those who have decided to serve. If the war in Iraq continues, there will no doubt have to be a draft. One more conflict, and its a sure thing. I don't look for a revolution, but many draft dodgers.

While I agree, the proper treatment of our wounded soldiers is lacking in many many areas; I doubt very seriously the votes to initiate the draft would be there.

The president doesn't have the authority to declare war, that would be congress's job. And yes, I'm sure they would issue a draft and lot of mutiny would take place. Lets hope that does not happen! Happy Thanksgiving!

Draft if congress supported it, revolution no.... If the president ever tried it he would most likely be kicked out of office.

yes there would be a draft. Look man its one thing to not want to sign up now. Iraq is not the most noble of our conflicts. But you know what? you live in this country what we consider the best country in the world. When they ask you to stand up and fight for it not to do it would be extreme cowardice and also show you that your not even a true American. fortunately there are people that even in a time of war still go out and joined our armed forces to serve the country that has given them so much throughout their lives. Cause no matter how shitty you got it, its still better than 80% of the rest of the world.
