LOL This question doesn't take into account those of us who get thumbs down for saying legitimate controversial things.....I get it from all sides! I get it from the Christians for sympathizing with atheists, I get it form the atheists for backing up my Christian peeps, i get it from everyone when i Mormon out.......
Watch, i will get thumbs down for this answer too, because I don't care how controversial I am.....

I get a lot of thumbs down as a Jew when I respond in a way that doesn't agree with the christians. As long as I know that what I'm posting agrees with Jewish theology, it doesn't bother me.
I do try not to be offensive, but sometimes I mess up.
I seldom give a thumbs down. If a person disagrees with me politely, I don't mind. If a person is just being a jerk, I don't waste my time.
If a person's answer is well thought out, I will give it a thumbs up even if I disagree.

being controversial how would you know u got a thumbs down anyway? and if it be controversial does it mean its necessarily wrong? i mean when JESUS was on earth HE was constantly hounded by the religious leaders for HIS contrevercial sayings that they did not agree too.
I am also reminded of noah who preached for 120 years a very contrevercial topic. their will be a flood .HOW many believed him? . NOW IN RELIGION AND SPIRITUALITY u get fast answers that are from hecklers and some that believe things that a close study of the bible itself would not agree with so then would that not be in actuality contrevercial.. ?
since u get points for if its wrong or silly would many care what they say?

You think that you have to always think with the flow? Most of the times, I don't even realize that what I think is "extreme" or "controversial" until I see the thumb down! And of course, I'd like it if everybody would be like "yeah she's right, let's give her a thumb up" but apprently people think differently based on their country, culture, religion, sex, age etc...

The thumbs down doesn't necessarily mean that we are wrong. You have to realize that all questions, specially the ones regarding religion, are very subjective and opinions come from all lights of the spectrum. You also have to realize that this forum invites controversy, whether is intentional or consequential. Another point is that most people in here ask questions which they already have a personal answer to it, they just accept the ones which are more convenient to their definitions.

Anyone who actually cares if they get a thumbs down by someone they have never met before over the internet has some issues.

I personally give thumbs up or down for my own sake.... as a trivial and meaningless expression of my own opinion of whatever it is someone has said.... if I can be bothered to even do that.
What people think of those thumbs up or down I don't rightly care. About the only further purpose I can ascribe to them is wanting more thumbs up on my best answers so I get more points and thus can potentially express myself more and more often (when I eventually level up).
Other people?
Thumbs down?
I pity those who care.

the thumbs system was doomed from the start.
its severly misused and is a tool for people to berate an answer they dont agree with.
the thumbs system was supposed to be used to rate the quality of the answer - not the content. now people that dont agree with the answer can give it a thumbs down even if it was of good quality.
i think they should get rid of thumbs and we should be able to quote eachother's answers like a messageboard can.

I know someone who never checks how many thumbs that they get (up or down). They just say their peace and move on to the next question without ever looking back. Sometimes I think that is what Fireball does.

I think they enjoy the attention they get by posting controversial questions & answers & by getting others with differing opinions all stirred up with the slightly insulting way they word them as well. The thumbs-downs just let them know they're getting it.
