The number of drinks a person can tolerate depends on a few variables. First off is the standard for alcohol is any of the following constitutes one drink: 1 shot of any hard liquor in a drink or raw. One 12 Oz. beer or one 8 Oz. glass of wine. Next we have to consider the size of the person drinking. Generally speaking, the larger the person the more tolerant they are to alcohol. Next is time. How much alcohol aver a certain course of time. Then there are other variables such as stomach contents, liver function (Which is generally stable notwithstanding a known liver deficiency) and fatigue. So let's set up a scenario. Jane is 21 years old, weighs 125 lbs. and has had a piece of pizza for supper but she skipped lunch. It is now 6 PM and she sits at a bar for a glass of wine. Jane should probably stop at one glass and wait an hour or so before driving. If Jane has a second glass within say 25 minutes, she would likely be very close to a .06 to .08 range BAC (Blood alcohol content). If a driver is involved in a felony car crash, the police can use a .04 or greater BAC to prove just enough impairment to support a felony level DUI.
Second scenario: Bill is 21 years old and weighs 235 lbs. He ate a piece of pizza for supper but missed lunch. He sits at the bar and drinks 2 beers within 15 minutes. He could most likely drive off right away and be okay. These scenarios are loosely constructed on my personal experiences as a cop and occasional drinker. The bottom line is that everyone out there must take personal responsibility and make a hard and fast rule to never get behind the wheel after drinking at all.
As far as drinking and blowing 0.0, one drink would likely register a .01. The machine limit is 100 but a person would be dead. The highest I have seen as a cop was a .53 and the guy was still driving a car when arrested! The breath operator did the test twice because he could not believe that the machine was right! The .53 came up twice exactly the same!
Talk about being drunk at the wheel!

Good topic! I wish more people would be careful about their drinking and driving behavior. A long time ago, I was stopped for speeding in California while driving home from my night school class. The policeman was quite surprised when I told him I had had nothing to drink but Sprite and was coming home from night school. He was incredulous when I blew a 0.0 on the breathalyzer. He said, "Oh, I was sure you would be drunk!"
I told him it was just late and I wanted to get home.
He let me go and said to drive safely. His wise words stayed with me and I spent the next 15 years without any ticket whatsoever.

With any alcohol, you probably can't blow a 0.0. Even if you gargle with something like Listerine (which I do every morning) you could blow some significant number.

Check out the websites and speak to the patrolmen and women who do this for a living- they have a great deal of experience.

I have to agree that this site http://www.healthstatus.com/bac.html
is very imformative and fairly accurate as far as what police officers are taught. The BA is a very accurate machine and the police quality units are the best because they have to be because the attorneys would have their results dismissed if they werent scientifically proven. There are a few handheld units that are reputable as well but they are only used for field screenings as they provide no evidentual printout or etc... to submit in court. The ones cops use at the station provide a printout that is usually sent via phone line to whoever in the state oversees breath alcohol tests in your state, here it is the Dept of Public Safety. Our state currently has a no tolerance law for persons under the age of 21, which provides that no "measurable ammt" of alc. can be in their system while driving. The law states .02 grams alc. per 100 ml breath which allows for the "lawfull accuracy" of the breathalyzer which is allowed to be + or - .01 by our state law(OK). any more questions feel free to email me.

ONE.

1 hour for every ml of pure alcohol (pure alcohol content varies in each drink. for example in beer its 4-9% while in wine, its 40%!!!!!)

There is no limit to speak of, but they arent going to test a dead person now are they?

One drink and you have alcohol in your system. It takes on average 1 hour for every drink to pass the alcohol in the system.
