SONY BY A MILE. All Sony products are excellent. I have just purchased a Sony Plasma. Everything about it is far superior to Samsung.
I had a Samsung set - nothing but trouble. After Sales Service was terrible. Would NOT recommend any of their products.
Also Sony have a Help Line. They are SO SO helpful.
GO FOR SONY EVERY TIME.

In terms of outright brand, neither. These are the top two of the LCD pile though. Both brands can deliver stunning results that are quite comparable with one another. But the bigger comparison is in the specific models. Both brands offer a variety of lines or series of TV models. You need to examine comparable models, or have a budget in mind, and then you can decide on the "better" brand. Otherwise there is no clear option. If you went absolutely highest end on both, it would be a near impossible choice. I think maybe Samsung might edge out Sony right now (because they had a more recent update), but that could change immediately as of next year of Sony then does their latest update. If you went absolutely lowest priced, again it would be nearly the same. I think both brands would deliver so-so image quality in their entry level options. Though I kind of prefer the images from the base Sony models to the Samsung ones. But that's just an aesthetic taste thing, there's not really numbers or something definitive to support it. So the fight ends up in the middle of the pack TVs. And it really depends which specific models you are looking at. And a specific budget would help determine which models you should be looking at.

If your thinking of being a Plasma then I'd recommend a Pioneer .The 42 inch has won What HIFI Sound and Video award for best television for the last couple of years , initially with their HD ready 43inch (which I have and its awesome) and now with its Kuro product.
But if youv'e decided on Sony or Samsung then I'd go for Sony I've had lots of Sony stuff and its always been top notch and reliable.
Good luck

You shouldn't be concerned about the brand.... you should be concerned about the quality of the specific TVs. Bravia is good, but I prefer the new Samsung Hi def Tvs.
