Well, you know she is just concerned about you and your well being. Let her have this time. You will perhaps soon be moving out, find someone special, get married and begin your own family.
It might be less of a big deal to her if you called just to let her know you are ok. Or, let her know where you will be. This is not her checking up on you as much as her just being concerned.
Also, to answer your question, it is not that big of a deal unless you are doing things that put you at risk of harm.

You are getting in trouble for coming home late because your parents know you are not doing anything constructive at a late hour. They love you and are trying to make sure you don't end up pregnant and ruining your future. Listen to them. You are only 18. My parents were the same. I am now 26 with a good education, great career, and nice boyfriend. Oh, I'm so glad they kept on me to come home on time!

as long as you live at home, and are under age, you should go by her rules. why. Courtesy for HER peace of mind!
why. Because she just spent the last 17yrs raising you, when you were little spent most waking hours trying to protect you from the sick whacko's out there, just as she is now....
why. Because they are still out there, and if your a female out late at night, most men don't get raped!
get my point!
Courtesy. You'll be out on your own soon enough, then you can stay out as late as you want, provided you don't have to get up early to support yourself.
So you better enjoy living at home, being protected, bills paid, before your out in the real world, where when your an adult, that luxury is no more!

I'm sorry to report to you that your Mother is RIGHT! She's been there, done that, and has experience in this matter. Anything after midnight, usually involves over active hormones. A time schedule is good. It controls amorous feelings from going to far.....

If you don't want to respect your mother's wishes anymore, move out so you can do whatever you want. This is what adults do. End of big deal, end of pretty sad situation.

Personally, I wouldn't want to live with anyone -- male or female, old or young -- who didn't let me know when he or she was expected home. Seems like an elementary safety precaution.

Oh...what a horrible plight. You live under someone elses roof for free...and - heavens!...they have rules!
