IT DEPENDS ON WHICH SYSTEM YOU HAVE.

20 GB- 0% of playable PS2 games.
40 GB- 0% of playable PS2 games.
60 GB- About 95% of playable PS2 games.
80 GB- About 88% of playable PS2 games.

For the 60 GB and 80 GB models, each time you download the updates from the free Playstation network, the % of playable games increases.

if you have the 60gb or 80 gb, then yea the ps2 games usually work on it. i have a ddr (dance dance revolution) game for ps2, tho and it doesnt work on my ps3 because the mat cant connect it. so you cant play the dance games but other than that, you can play any ps2 game. remember to get a memory card adapter tho so you can have the memory from your ps2games onto your ps3.

If it's the new 40GB model, then no, i'm sorry, PS2 games wont work on it. (Sony removed the b/wards compat. to reduce costs.)
If you're not sure, try them. It wont hurt the system and if it wont play them it'll simply tell you so.

It won't break it.
PS3 does run backwards compatible software but it does not work on all games. Just give it a try and see what happens.
