hey,

well i just started college, im currently trying to earn a degree in computer science. i don't mind the program, but im very concerned about it socially.

for one the guy to girl ratio is like 50:1, and i don't know, part of me wants to go into a different program to meet more people(well, girls to be specific). ive heard that you eventually become best friends with the people in your program, and I just can't see that happening. not to try and sound judgemental but they make the most corny jokes and find it funny, and im more of the kind to party and stuff while most of the guys in this program enjoy playing chess and such.

now don't get me wrong, i'm not going to put my career at risk because if i earn a degree with computers im almost guarenteed to earn good money, but i don't want to miss out socially and hinder meeting girls...am i thinking like a 14 year old or do i have something here.

It is natural to want to enjoy your best years right now. Your thinking isn't unusual, but it is off the mark of your goal.

Your goal is to get your degree in computer science and secure a great job that you will enjoy and prosper. Does that sound too adult? It should!! You are an adult. At 18, it may seem like party time, but that is for the weekend.

Do your time in studying and save the socializing for the weekend. There is no crime or shame in doing well and having a serious approach to your work. It isn't easy, so take it serious and give it all you got!

You will have friends always, but college is expensive and important. Your resume in 4-6 years will be better respected with elements such as: GPA - 3.5, honor roll 4 years

instead of "had many girlfriends, went to parties 3 times per week, won beer bong contest 2 out of 3 times.

Which candidate would you like to hire to work in your software company?

You are in college....There are other classes going on, why not try to meet people in the other classes? While yes, computer science is a decent field to go into, about five years ago there was a boom for it, and everyone started taking computer courses. Now, the luster has worn off because there are plenty of people with the degrees. I know a few people who have computer science degrees and work in a warehouse, nothing to do with their job.

I think you need to rethink your computer career. Because all those people you meet in college are the same kind of people you are going to be working with for the rest of your life.

I did computer science in college for a couple of years, then worked in the field for a couple of years. Those people you describe is all you ever meet. So when I went back to college I did Business Information Technology. That was basically the easy half of computers together with the easy half of business studies. This gives you a lot more career options, and far fewer sad geeks to deal with. Also far more hot women do business studies versus computers.

Having some kind of business studies portion makes your qualification far more broad. But if you really want to be a programmer you are probably going to have to stick with what you are doing and put up with the geeks and lack of women.
