its not like they take polls or have secret cameras in our house. So how do they do it? I mean, wouldnt i be smarter to relese things on DVD first, cause ppl u cnt wait for the show so theyll buy the DVDs first? I think its for ratings but cant they get ratings based on how many dvds they sell? so my main question is how the get show ratings.

There's a company called Nielsen and they use special boxes that record what channel you watch and how long you watch it.

It's not as concise as you think, because if you leave the box on, it ASSUMES you're watching TV.

The people that get these boxes are paid by Neilsen to do a questionaire every month.

And Neilsen attempts to match the general population by selecting a cross-section that matches a small percentage of the national market.....

They may select rich/poor, East/Midwest/South/West, city/country etc to get a cross-section that reflects today's present population.

Then they look for overall preferences and sub-cultural preferences too...

And that's how they can rate the shows....

There are 2 different business here.

Releasing TV shows on DVD are not tied to ratings. In fact, the popularity of TV shows on DVD caught the industry by surprise. Low rated shows actually flew off the shelves faster than higher rated shows like "Friends" which was a weekly ratings grab.

In the US, Nielsen Media Research compiles ratings data based on samples. They take the samples either by issuing paper journals to participating households to write down what they watch or by issuing set-top meters that monitor what channel is playing in certain areas of the country. The small percentage of the population that serves as a sample is extrapolated to represent all viewers for the purposes of judging the viewership of programs.

The channels run mainly on advertisements.. If they start distributing their materials on discs, disc piracy will make them paupers.. They get their ratings by the feedbacks given y the people and the polls conducted..

they survey small number but varied people (coming from different economic class, culture, locations, etc.) while tha show is being aired, and compute the average from there.

so when they say 66% ratings, that means 66% of respondents watched that particular show.
