You may need exercises for the rest of your life, therefore I suggest you learn a good technique that you can do for the rest of your life. I did Pilate's, started in Beginners Class stopped before I went onto advanced as I had learned how to isolate the muscle groups, how to exercise these groups, posture, breathing and as I have RA important for the rest of my life, having just turned 49. Therefore see a PT or see if they have a Pilate's Class in your area. Once you learn the correct techniques your can do it at home, without any equipment and have it for life. I do my Pilate's Sunday night for one hour. Good Luck.

Generally, you can go for these exercises to relieve back pain:

1. Cardio exercise - low impact type
2. Core exercise
3. Pilates
4. Stretching

Choose one that fits you and your bad back condition.

Do it 3-4 times per week, for 15-20 mins per session.

I often get back pain first thing in the morning and a good stretch usually helps. You want to be careful though and not overstretch your muscles because the pain from that will continue bothering you and there isn't much you can do to get rid of it.

These are good stretches here:

perform 1-2 daily

If the problem persists; see your family physician and get a script to see a physical therapist. He/she will use modilities like moist heat and electrical stimulation to help with the discomfort and teach you lumbar stabilization exercises and stretches.

Good Luck
