Any animal or human can be stressed/anxious. They may not think like we do but they have feeling and it is their feelings that are exaggerated by stressful conditions. Hope you dont have a dog.

Dog's can definitely be stressed. This could be from an irritating noise, a sudden change in food, if the owner is gone a lot and the dog loses out on attention and affection...there are various ways but these are the most common. Also, if the dog is young and recently separated from it's mother, it is bound to be stressed. I recommend that the owner try and spend more time with the pooch, try something different in food or make sure that there isn't anything rattling or pinging etc near where the puppy sleeps to keep it from being irritated. If the owner is open to it, also try letting the dog hop into bed with you for a while, it might help.

Just because you can't speak canine or a dog cannot speak English doesn't mean they don't THINK! How does anyone know what an animal is capable of thinking? I'm sure they don't unlike us worry about the future or regret the past but they certainly can become stressed. It's usually an enviroment issue. Too much noise, (not always one we can hear) a change to normal routine, a visit to the Vet's, (it's not that they remember the last visit it's the overwhelming smells of other animals that we can't detect)
Your friend should be trying to find the cause not arguing with you over things you clearly have no understanding of.

Yes, all animals can feel stressed. And yes, they CAN think! Any creature with a brain can think! In fact in MHO is, some animals have better brains than some humans! LOL Just they can't speak to us in our terms, therefore we do not understand them, and that in itself can be frustrating for the animals. Just have your friend take the time, put himself in the puppies place, to see what your friend is doing or not doing for the puppy that is causing stress. If it is something that your friend might be stressed over, than more than likely the puppy might be too. If he wimpers, maybe he needs to go out, maybe he might need food or water, or maybe just needs some of his masters undivided attention! Also if your friend is stressed out, the puppy can feel that. Animals have what we call sympathy pains. There could be one or numerous things can cause them stress. Maybe the puppy is trying to tell him something, that something is wrong, and maybe the dog can show him, if he pays attemtion to the puppies signals. If he just recently got him, maybe he's homesick; then make sure he has lots of attention during the day to keep it's mind occupied . Animals have more smarts and understandings than people give them credit for!
Good Luck and give the puppy a hug!

Animals can become stressed when they are unsure or afraid. They may not process information like we do, and they cannot become stressed over, say, an empty food bowl, because they don't understand the concept of it never refilling itself- animals attach themselves to routines, if you fill the bowl every morning, the dog has no reason to think you won't someday and stress over it. However, sudden changes, like a new baby, a new home, moving, illness, etc. can cause stress in a dog. This will manifest in diarrhea, trembling, drooling, vomiting, loss of appetite, etc. Even just living in a stressful household (family fighting constantly, high energy, rushing around, etc.) can pass stress on to the dog; they perceive energy and emotions far better than humans.
The remedy is simply to keep the dog in a calm, safe, constant environment. Don't have a ton of people over disrupting his territory, feed him on a schedule same time every day, take him for predictable walks or trips only, not to a lot of strange random places, keep the tension out of the household. A quiet, routine-based home will allow the dog to be happy and healthy.

after working with rescue dogs for many years that have been beaten and abused i can put my hand on my heart and say yes they can feel stressed and depressed, just because a dog cant talk in the human language doesnt mean they dont feel the same pain and upset as you do! i have worked with many a dog who when we recieve them they wont let you near them and they wont eat and by the time we are ready to re-home them they are happy contented dogs who love us to bits. what makes your friend say your puppy is stressed? does he wet in your house or whine in the corner etc.... if indeed your puppy is showing signs of stress i would suggest you look at his lifestyle, how much time do you spend away from him? how do you punish him and is it that he is just a very nervous dog in which case a vet can help, i really think if you dont understand your puppy you should try harder too

Well I have a dog with adrenal failure - he need medication to stay alive. He needs MORE medication when stressed so I assure you he can stress...
In fact the single thing that requires the most extra stress medication is to go to an event he enjoys with my other dogs and I and NOT participate. He did NOTHING but sit in the car (which he has done before without stress) so it was ALL mental....

Dogs can feel emotion just as much as a human, they just feel different ones..eg..a dog does not feel spite, hate, revenge or pride or a need to know best.
Your friend knows his dog best and if he thinks its stressed then he should try and find out why and approach the problem cautiously. Good on him for realising that animals have feelings too, emotion is not the sole priviledge of the human race, sometimes i think we are more emtionally prehistoric than our furry friends

Yes, A bird will louse it's feathers when in falls into stress, animals have feeling and can sense danger, they do not have the means to process how to fix problems.. we need to take care of them. He needs to take him to he vet, and go over the dogs daily living conditions. Is he getting enough attention, or alone a lot of the time. Is his area loud always something he has to protect. It's amazing just putting yourself in their lives and looking at what you can do to improve tier lives...They depend on us.
Take care
