HI! First of all, a female kitten is SPAYED, not neutered--that's for a male cat. And, if your kitty is OVER 4 months old, call your vet and set up an appointment to have her spayed. I'm surprised that your vet did not tell you, but I will. While, YES, it's true, MOST female kittens don't come onto their first heat cycle until they are about 6 months old, SOME "little ladies" out there DO come into heat as early as 4 months old. This is way too young (so is 6 months old) to take the chance of her getting pregnant. So, if she is still UNDER 4 months old, you're still "safe". But, if she is over 4 months old, then it's time to call your vet and set up the appointment.
Bless you for doing the right thing. You ARE a responsible pet owner who knows how very important this is. And, you're RIGHT--we don't need anymore strays out roaming the streets, or being MURDERED at the shelters because there was no more room, or because their owners did not care enough to take care of their animals properly. Good luck with getting your little girl spayed.

You can spay a female cat from 3 months of age as they're not like male cats that need time for their testicles to drop. I wouldn't wait any longer than 5 months and most good vets will spay a female cat on or before this time. If she does come into season she will try everything to get out, you'll have tom-cats hanging around, she will be very vocal and drive you up the wall. It is hard finding new homes for kittens as so many are dumped and neglected every year.

The recommended time for neutering female cats is 5 - 6 months old. Some charities will do it at 3 months old. It's an advantage to leave them till maturity.
Cats, unlike dogs can be neutered if they are calling (in season). A female dog will be running a high risk of surgical haemorrhage if they are neutered whilst in season.
A good guide is to check the canine teeth of your cat. When the permanent one has replaced the milk teeth around 18-20 weeks old , she's ready for the operation.

The sooner the better and I would agree that it ought to be done by 4 months. If you wait til 6 months, you very well might be having a litter of kittens before then. Ours have all been done by 4-5 months old, some as young as 2 months old.

As soon as she's old enough to start going out getting herself knocked up, is when I'd start to consider it. My aunt's cat had a tendency to sneak out and return weeks later, with things that she didn't leave with, if you know what I mean. It became a problem after a while, but my aunt made a fortune from all the kittens that she sold.

Trust me, I have been a "grandma" before I decided whether my cat was a male or a female :)
I learned when she started to look like a balloon :P

Sounds a bit odd, but if she was to get pregnant, let her have her first litter, sell the kittens to pay for the op.
