I am assuming you mean diarrhea...
We'll start here with the intestines. You have a small intestine (the long skinny one) which absorbs nutrients from food, and a large intestine (the small thick one) which absorbs remaining water from the food. Your intestine walls are lined with muscles to contract around the food and absorb all the nutrients and water. When muscles aren't exercised, they go weak and inneficient. Just as the muscles on your arms and legs, the intestines need something to resist in order to keep their strength. This comes in the form of Fibre. Your body can't digest fibre, but the intestines will try very hard to, hence working very hard and strengthening the muscle walls of your intestines. When your body does not get enough Fibre, the intestines go weak and slack, and cannot contract around the food properly. This results in poo which looks lumpy and is very wet, as the nutrients and water have not been absorbed properly by the intestines.
On the reverse side, if you get too much fibre, your muscle walls will be too strong and absorb too much water from the food, causing constipation, as the stools have no lubricant to leave the body.
It can also be caused by a range of diseases, all explained in the link below.

In addition to what Becca said, many medications can cause diarrhea and it can be a sign of illness and food poisoning and drinking water with a form a form of E. coli the body cannot process. Everyone's intestines has E.coli in it to process vegetable matter, but the E. coli in every area of the world is different, which is why people often get sick when they travel. You can tell everywhere a person has been in the world by the E. coli collected in his/her gut. it can also cause flatulence.
People who are diabetic should also know that many sweeteners used in candy to substitute for sugar cause intestinal motility and a feeling of diarrhea. Everyone is different, but I have found too much sorbitol and maltilol will do it to me. Stay at or below the recommended serving - for the entire day. The side effects can be upsetting.

When I have diarrhea my bum gets sore from going to the toilet so much. It scares me when I get diarrhea because one time I fainted on the floor. I did not replace my fluids so I became dehydrated. Now, whenever I have it I always drink flat diet coke or ginger ale . I have been very lucky. I rarely get diarrhea.
