How exactly does the 4wd system on a 2005 Ford Escape work. I relize its automatic, but what triggers it to come on, and would the light on the dash come on, to inform you its on?
Is there a certain speed as to which it would come on?

EDIT - is there a way to test to make sure its even working?(when running systems check thru dash, it states it is ok).

don't plan on using it for off-roading, just want to know that if there is major snow, and i am dirivng along, and start spinning that it kicks in, and hopefully stops it.

Basically a front wheel drive Car with a very weak rear axle assembly just to help you when the going gets tough. Designed more for roads not for serious off road use the rear differential has a device that engages the rear differential when the front wheels slip and the rear wheels can contribute about 40% to move that little trucklet. The differential locker can engage at any speed the front wheels turn faster than the rear. Some models you can electricaly engage the rear differential. I don't think there is a warning light for when the diffeerential locks in automatically

for 2005 there is no light or way to manually put your ford escape in awd mode and yes it really is an awd not 4wd....the majoor difference between awd and 4 wd is 4wd vehicles have a tranfer case and all wheel drives use either electronic sensors or a vicous coupling which is a series of cluthches with a hydraulic type fluid when wheel slippage occurs power is transferred to the rear wheels on a front drive based vehicle which your escape is. awd is very good and capable in onroad driving but I would not try any off roading with it.

One of the things I hated about that system was the inability to get out of AWD or to go into 4x4 all the time on some of them (I think they finally put a switch but haven't looked lately) But I agree with Yugie, The computer that controlls the AWD is alerting you that something is wrong with it and to bring it to a dealer to diagnose correctly.

It could be that you are shorting out a fuse. Was your car out in the rain? Maybe the sensor is wet. That would cause it to blink . Wait a day or two. If it continues then I would get it serviced.
