It's bland, and easy on the stomach, so it's good food for an invalid.

She may be doing what her own mother did when she was ill. If the illness is stomach related, the porridge may be intended to offer a simple enough food to have it 'stay down'. In the case of a sore throat, she may be attempting to give something that will not irritate the throat.

Miss Understood - Chicken Noodle soup has been clinically shown to have enzymes which can help one suffering from a cold or flu to recover or at least to feel better.

Is this outside the U.S? Here, it's soup; usually chicken noodle. I'm not really sure why, though. I prefer tomato. But i've found that the warmth of tomato soup helps soothe a sore throat or cough and clears up congestion, plus it's easier to eat (or drink) than solid food when you're sick. So i guess maybe that's why they serve porridge too.
