They both promise to deliver something of which there is absolutely no proof to back up.
If the person taking the snake oil truly believed in its healing properties and effectiveness, I see no difference in the two.
Please enlighten me as to how I've erred in this conclusion.

You have mistaken the context of what is deemed - "religion." Religion is a very bad word as your question truly implies. Religion, I believe, (haha) is a process that was set up by man to bring people into the third part of yourself - spirituality. You are made up of 3 elements that make your being - the physical, the mental and the spiritual. The physical and metal parts of you are tangible and you know quite well. The spiritual is fully 1/3 of your being and many, many people are messed up trying to find it. It's the so-called - hole in your heart". (and only God can fill!)
What you mean or what should be important is your FAITH! (See Hebrews 11 for the "hall of faith") Most people have a big problem with this but faith is " what we do not see." Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it's not there.
Snake oil cannot cure no mater how mcu you take.
FAITH can cure because it has power behind it. Can't see it? You're not looking.

Well, just as an example, there are many homeless people all over the world that when hungry or need a refuge can get it right there and then no_questions_asked, just because some Christians thought it would be a great idea to build refuges just to help people.
There are thousands of these places just in London.
Can you get that out of snake oil?

Obviously there would be no difference between a false religion and snake oil, but what if a religion had historical backup, archaeological backup, the evidence of detailed prophecies that came true and the evidence of eye witness accounts?

Religion is simply man's way of reaching God. It is the devil's way of saying, you have to do this and not this so that you'll earn good points with God. The devil sold u a booboo. You do not need a religion to meet God, you need a relationship. Arelationship is one that forges a bond of fellowship between you and God. He says the snake oil made him well because he may have been immuned to the previous snake bites in the firast place.

I do not think that you have erred in your conclusion. Just remember that only difference between organized religion, a cult, or a solitary snake oil salesman is the number of followers.

Snake oil's fun! You don't know what it really is, so you can experiment with it. Put some in your plants, and see how they grow! Try lighting some of it on fire; watch out though, it might explode! SWEET!
Religion though.... I mean, what can you do with a Bible? Read it? Set it on fire? That's about it.
