The rule we enforce with out cats is if you catch it you must eat it all and definitely not bring it into the house.
The second rule is that a duvet is not to be used in the same way as a litter tray

I used to have two cats. I found the first rule when they come into the house is to show them where the litter tray is and when they get taken short it is for using not looking at.

cats must not bring live prey into the house (especially if they let it go) :-)
luckily I've only had to enforce this rule once with my current cat, i explained the situation to him and told him to find said creature, kill it and leave it where i can find and dispose of it, this is to be done by morning, which is exactly what my cat did :-) he learns quickly. he's never brought a live one in since.

Be sure to wear ear plugs when sleeping, otherwise the meowing for food in the morning will drive you nuts.
