During the late Roman Empire, atheism — a capital crime — was a common legal prosecution. In the European Middle Ages people were persecuted for apostacy, especially in countries where the Inquisition was active. Medieval impiety and godlessness were closer to weak atheism than avowed strong atheism, and hardly any expression of strong atheism is known from this period.

In 18th to 20th Century Europe among those imprisoned for atheism was Denis Diderot. For fear of persecution, the French philosopher Baron d'Holbach had to publish his books anonymously in Amsterdam. His book Systeme de la Nature was burned by an angry mob. On March 25, 1811, Percy Bysshe Shelley was expelled from Oxford University for not refusing authorship of the pamphlet The Necessity of Atheism.

Once appointed to the Chancellorship of Germany, Hitler banned freethought organizations and launched an “anti-godless” movement. In a 1933 speech he declared: “We have . . . undertaken the fight against the atheistic movement, and that not merely with a few theoretical declarations: we have stamped it out.”.

Irreligious people in Iran are not recognized as citizens. While Jews, Christians and other minorities have the right to take part in university entrance exams and can become members of parliament or city councils, irreligious people are not granted even their basic rights. Most irreligious people, however, hide their beliefs and pretend to be Muslims. Non-believers—atheists—under Islam do not have "the right to life". Apostasy in Iran is punishable by death.

Atheists have never been the victim of massage persecution like the Jews and Christians. Maybe the Roman Catholic church at one point? They persecuted everyone so that's my guess lol

Atheists aren't exactly an organized group, but we get the most crap from fundamentalist religions around us...In the United States, that usually means evangelicals.

Most of history shows aversion, bigotry, and violence perpetuated against the outsider- whether outside of cultural or religious norms. One need not be an atheist to suffer from this exclusion, but questioning a certain religion could cause you harm.

I have never heard of atheists being a persecuted group, except maybe during the Spanish Inquisition. But those crazies persecuted everyone, including Catholics whom they represented.

I don't worry about it. I'm more concerned with protecting our Constitution from theocrats to worry about who wants to oppress due to my lack of belief. I use the system.

When I was fired in 1994 for being an atheist, I appealed via the state and won. Back pay with interest, etc, and the manager had to write a personal letter of apology to me. That wasn't my choice; it was the arbitrator's, who was so outraged he insisted that be part of the agreement. It was enough for me to uphold the First Amendment.

I have to use my energy wisely- protecting the schools from creationism, coerced speech, now that's persecution. Someone calling me a name? Pffft, who cares?

Theists of course.

Atheists have probably been the most persecuted group in history, probably even more so than the Jews.
