Actually, some people feel the urge to do it even if they ARE married.
Anyway, in Christianity the idea stems from the story of Onan, which actually had NOTHING to do with masturbation.
I personally see nothing wrong with masturbation. It's natural, and it can often help relieve sexual tension. Also, people who masturbate are more likely to be comfortable with their body and their own sexuality.

The idea is to declare sinful anything that is enjoyable and that most people do and cannot refrain from doing.

wow i had no idea what your question meant until i realized you were discussing masturbation. But all that crass speech aside.. the reason it is forbidden in scripture is that it is a waste of life. Useless. No production of life..finite, so to speak. No seed may be spilt on barren ground.
