Like the others said they don't go around digging up dead bodies. If you were LDS and went to the temple you could be baptized for a dead family member. All they would do is instead of saying your name they would say the dead persons name, and dunk you.
They believe that there are people on the other side who aren't baptized members of the LDS church waiting to BE baptized into the Mormon church. They need the LDS members to do this for them.
This is just one way Joseph Smith took one versus in the Bible and made a whole doctrine out of it. He didn't even understand what the chapter was talking about.

No digging up bodies or anything gross like that - it's all done vicariously, and with permission of the nearest living family members (if not performed by the nearest living family members themselves).
where in the Bible does it say that baptism is essential for entering into heaven? John 3:5 is one of the many:
"Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God."
It is not only based on Paul's comments about baptism for the dead during his argument for the resurrection (while that is a good biblical refference) it is also based on modern revelations from God, which is an essential part of our religious beliefs; the concept that the heavens are not quiet or sitting around idly today.

Baptism is part of the Born Again Process described in St. John 3:5. Jesus Christ taught that we MUST be born again of the water AND of the spirit! St. Peter preached it on the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2:38. We must repent, be baptized bty immersion in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins (water), then we will receive the Holy Ghost (Spirit) with the evidence of speaking in an unlearned language that the Bible calls tongues. If the mormons are doing this, it won't help because the dead don't speak and it certainly isn't Biblical.

Baptism for the Dead is a ritual invented by Joseph Smith for the purpose of entering dead people into heaven who did not have the opportunity, or who did not take the opportunity to join the Mormon Church. According to Tanner, “Even though the Book of Mormon is supposed to contain the fullness of the gospel, it never mentions the doctrine of baptism for the dead, not even once. The word ‘baptism’ appears 25 times in the Book of Mormon. The word ‘baptize’ appears 28 times. The word ‘baptized’ appears 85 times, and the word ‘baptizing appears 6 times, but the doctrine of baptism for the dead isn’t even mentioned once.”
Well I don't believe that the dead are conscious of anything. If we could baptize them, does it also mean that a person could be as wicked as they choose for their entire life, and then when dead be pardoned!?

This practice is based on an obscure verse upon which an entire teaching is fabricated. When one is trying to understand scripture is it always best to use caution when you are unable to verify it other places in scripture.
The practice of taking one verse out of context to justify one's actions is called "proof-texting" and is nearly always a bad thing.
