Dear Friend,
There are all kinds of religions from A to Z. But there is a "true" and "real" relationship you can have with the "living" person of Jesus Christ.
Asking Jesus into your life is not a religion, it is a relationship and He will take you on the most exciting adventure of your life.
What do you have to do? You have to agree with God that you are a sinner. You have to repent of anything that is displeasing to God and ask Him to cleanse you from all ...unrighteousness. When you do, He will adopt you into HIS family and He will become your heavenly Father.
And of course the best way to get to know God is through His Word (the Bible). He will give you the Holy Spirit, the third Person in the Trinity and He will teach and show you absolute truth.
God's Word is a Treasure Chest of Jewels just waiting for you to discover them. His Word is a "love" letter to you.

An organized belief system encompassing a reference for or belief in the supernatural, sometimes with deities (not always).
Of the monotheistic religions (such as Christianity, Islam), a few of these tend to be true:
1. You must believe in a specific dogma that requires belief in a monotheistic god (and Jesus in the case of Christianity)
2. If you do believe, you may be subject to heaven/paradise. If you do not believe, you will go to a place that will torture you eternally
3. There is no evidence for the said beliefs.
You can decide what is valuable, if anything, in religions. There are thousands of others, and they play by different rules. I'm particularly fond of the Bhagavid Gita.

Religion is a tool that was created by humans to help them get through life and hard times - usually around existing cultural, geographical and health customs of the world. Some people like the organized variety (which comes with full instructions) but others like the ala carte method, which encourages you to make your own system. Ultimately they seem to boil down to
1. there is something more to existence and ourselves than what we see here
2. Instructions of getting divine help (prayer, meditation, intentions, etc.) to overcome life's obstacles
3. an explanation of what happens when we die.

Religion is an organised form of worship of a god or gods used as a means to control the population through organisation, standardisation and by playing on peoples guilt and fear of death..
millions of people have been killed in the name of some god or another because another religion disagreed with a translation or misinterpretaion of a religious book claimed to be the "word" of god.
All religious books were written by men and skewed to fit the policies and politics of whoever was in charge of a particular sect at the time of writing.
Many religions impose a tax on its congregation anything from 10 to 50 percent of your wages.

Created by men to control women and give the top creator an easy existence here on earth.
Many have an insight into our existence and thus create a supernatural law to coerce others to conform to it.
My God is better than yours and I'll slaughter all of you to prove it.
Nowadays,if men can find women with good jobs. he doesn't need to create a religion to get an easy existence.

I do like the open-ness of your Question ..... but i must ASK of the Honesty of the Individual concerned with this Generality , as I have EXPERIENCED personally the fact that I have had Girl-friends who would perform Sexual Acts AND go to Church on Sunday!.....and make their Parents believe that they DIDN`T.......Can GOD accept THAT?

A system of belief and worship with a sense of awe along with a desire to seek or connect to something greater than ourselves.
I know it's vague but that's the best I can come up with.
